Hi

Have you checked the 1881 census which is free at

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

Clearly Annie had more than one illegitimate child.

If you have seen that 1881 entry - you will know where Bessie got her name from

You need to go back to 1871 to find John's wife

1871 for Christchurch - all shown as b Church

John Read 33 agric labourer
Jane 32
Bessie   15
George 9

Interesting - I don't think John Read was Bessies father as he was single in 1861

It also looks as though he was also illegitimate

1861 - all b Christchurch

Moses ...field  50 (can't decipher surname but it's not Read) - unmarried - bootmaker
Mary Read 54 unmarried charwoman
John Read 23 son

There is a marriage in June qtr 1861 with a Jane Vey on the same page

You may be thoroughly confused by now with all the various names etc so here's a quick sum up

Bessie Frances Sinsbury b 1889 was actually born Bessie Frances Read - illegitimate dtr of Annie Read

Annie did not marry Frank Sinsbury until 1890 and Frank died in 1892

Annie's father John Read was the illegitimate son of Mary Read

John Read married Jane Vey who had an illegitimate daughter Bessie Vey who is shown as Bessie Read on census entries.  Bessie was born 1856 and John & Jane only married in 1861

Jane Read (Vey) died 1880

Thank you again Carole W.
It would seem that there is no Sinsbury blood flowing in this branch of the family tree,
Whatever his beginnings John Read must have been quite some man, even at 62 in the 1901 census his household is still caring for May a niece 5yrs old. If my great-aunt Bessie was a typical sibling of the family he made a pretty good job with their upbringing.
Your & others time and effort very much appreciated and thanks for your summary.
Regards.
