Hi Linell

Maybe the 2 Emmanuels are cousins. I'll have to look into it further.

The 1817 record just gives Stafford as the county. It doesn't mention a village or town, so I'll need to verify it with the Rowley Regis parish records - when I find out where to go to do that!

Hi Judy, I have the RR Parish Records and have found this:-

8.6.1817 Emanuel base born son of Martha Johnson Treacle Street.

Treacle Street was in RR not Dudley Wood, so are there two of them?

All good fun, Linell.

That's him Linell. Thanks.  ;D

I should have said that although he lived with Caroline in Dudley Wood he said in census info that he was born in Rowley Regis.

Is there a marriage of his mother Martha in Rowley Regis some time after his birth, as I would like to know if he had any siblings? I hope you don't mind me asking.

Thanks again

Judy :)

Hi Judy, Dudley Wood would come under Rowley Regis Registration District, Dudley Wood is a grey area, sort of half in RR Staffs and the rest in Netherton Dudley, the Census details back then were not always that accurate.

Will look into this as someone else has Emanuel as the son of Aaron and Lucy?  That maybe incorrect.

There is a Marriage 17.11.1823 Halesowen - James Shaw X bach otp and Martha Johnson X spinster otp - By Banns - Witnesses were the Church Warden George Fiddian and a Rosanna Cole.  Have no way of proving this is your Martha though, unless they are living near Emanuel in 1841.

Will see what else I can find Linell.

1841 New Street Rowley Regis

James Shaw 40 Nailer All born in County
Martha 40
Samuel 15
Roseanna 14
Ritchard 12

Nothing to connect Martha to Emanuel unfortunately.  There is also a Daniel Johnson aged 35 with wife Elizabeth a few doors away, could connect to Martha?

Thanks for all this Linell. :)

Looking on the IGI I identified a possible christening for Martha in RR in 1798. She was the child of Samuel and Nancy Johnson and had an older sister Rosanna - maybe the Rosanna Cole who was a witness in the Shaw marriage.

Emmanuel and Caroline had a big gap in their children between Sarah 1840 and Edward 1848, so difficult to tell if they had children in between with family names to help. The Dudley St Thomas entries end in 1841 on the IGI after Sarah's christening, which isn't very helpful!  :P

Hi Judy, your Emanuel was the son of Martha, a very good genealogist has looked the Marriage up for me, Emanuel had no father on the Marriage entry, here are the details:-

13.3.1840 St Thomas Dudley - Emanuel Johnson bach otp Miner of Dudley Wood - No Father named on the entry and Catherine Hill Spinster Minor otp
Dudley Wood - Father Joseph Hill Labourer.  By Banns - Witnesses were Issac and Hannah Hill.  They all signed with an X.

Looks like Rosanna was a family name then Judy, as you say other children could have died young between the Census years, but I am sure that is the right connection.  Linell.

Thanks Linell. :) And thank your friend as well.

I found Rosanna Cole (marriage witness) with husband William in 1841 and with them was Rosanna Shaw (possible daughter of Martha Johnson and James Shaw from the Halesowen marriage you found). Also Samuel Johnson and family were with them. Maybe Samuel (born about 1821) is a baseborn child of Rosanna or perhaps just a nephew or something.

This family are interesting!!

Gosh Judy this is coming together at a pace!  Looks like your Martha did marry James Shaw then, it's a great help when other family members are in the household on the Census, happy hunting from Linell.
