Arthur Kelly b 1836 Margaret Martin b 1837 Help!
« on: Saturday 31 March 12 06:13 BST (UK) »
I have an Australian marriage certificate for my 3rd great grandparents, Arthur Kelly and Margaret Martin. They married in Australia but the cert says they both emigrated from Galway. However, I cannot find a hint of them or their parents online.

Here is what I have - Arthur Kelly born 1836, father Brian and mother Mary.

Margaret Martin born 1837, father Walter Martin and mother Eliza Hynes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The marriage cert also suggests Arthur had a brother called Michael who was also in Australia to witness the marriage.

I have a lot of info once Arthur and Margaret get to Australia, as Arthur was on the local council and turns up in the newspapers a lot, in good and bad ways. But their time in Ireland is a total blank.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat  :)

You really need a bit more information - religion and parish, for example but here is something for you to read which may help:

My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?
Introduction to Irish Records

Griffiths Valuation  (taken about 1855) has some entries for the name Walter Martin.

best wishes

Thanks for that.

Their religion was Catholic. As for parish, that detail is lacking on the marriage cert I have.

I'm trying to find any registration for their arrival in Australia, but am having no success. I might be able to get parish records if I do.

I gather that both of their fathers were farmers.

I am probably clutching at straws here.

Margaret Martin and Arthur Kelly were my g-g-grandparents also! Would love to swap information.
Very sorry for being so brief, but I'm in a net cafe. Will write more later.
