Where is George street, Salford?
« on: Saturday 31 March 12 02:28 BST (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can help. An 1840 birth certificate gives the address as George street, in the "Regent Road" sub registration district of Salford. Can anyone tell me which George street this was? There seem to be 2 or 3 possibilities in the Salford area...

Thanks so much
Steve , Auckland

My guess is that it is N George St, just up from Regent Rd, on Google maps. By the Business School.

If you go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=383690,401910 you can see George Street Salford on the old maps. Edit I'm not sure if this is the correct George Street

It is worth a look at the description of the enumeration district to see what the surrounding streets are

No it isn't. It looks as though you have George Street, Broughton

Looking at 1841 enumeration district description, it may be the long street which is almost parallel with Oldfield Road. Barrow Street and James Street connect them and on a modern map is possibly Islington Way.

I used the modern postcode M3 5HP to search oldmaps and the 1851 town plans show it more clearly.

I hope this is the right one  :)

For the other George Street you can go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=382670,398450  and the 1:500 Town Plan of 1891
In the 1841 Salford Street Index http://www.rootschat.com/links/060v/  there are three entries for George Street

That's the same one that  I posted about Stan.  :)
I would think that the three entries are because of the length of the street.

This is also a possibility - was Great George Street in 1850 town plan running behind the Adelphi area (Business school now)

Perhaps as Sylvia suggests, finding the family in a census may help to identify. :)
