Gilbert MARSHALL c 1800 Convict to Australia
« on: Friday 30 March 12 04:57 BST (UK) »
 ??? Looking in any info. no matter how small on Gilbert MARSHALL  c1800. He was convicted for burglery on 13 apr 1819 at Bristol City Session of Peace sentenced to death. This was then altered to 14 years and transported to Austrlaia, arriving on convict ship "Recovery" in Dec 1819. He was later transported to Tasmania. He married a Janet Black (convict) 1834 in Tamania. From this point on I have all the families history.

Now I need to find his parents, but don't know if he was born in Gloucestershire or Somerset. Have found a Gilbert in Bridgewater, about right birth date. but wrong father, as his death certificate states father, as also Gilbert. No records that I have searched, will bring up a Gilbert with a Gilbert.

Any help on tracking his parents down, would be greatly appreciated ;)

Have you had a look at freereg.org.uk ?  There is a Gilbert George Marshall baptised in 1795 Somerset with father also called Gilbert.  Could this be him?

Moderators: Sorry if I'm not allowed to post look ups here that aren't my own transcriptions  :-[

I have found 3 newspaper articles in the Bristol Mercury between January and June 1819 which mention a Gilbert Marshall accused and convicted of stealing (no mention of family though).

If you would like copies PM me an email address

Sue

Sorry to but in here but have you found were Gilbert was born/parents etc yet?

1841 Census has a Gilbert Stowell Marshall c 1826 living in Middlesex with Parents WILLIAM/LOUISA.
1851 Census William is born c 1802 London and Louisa and all Children born Watchet, Somerset.
Given the Stowell connection William may be a Brother of Gilbert.
Although this Gilbert is down as born Watchet, Somerset he was Baptised in London;

Gilbert Stowel MARSHALL
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Birth: 21 Aug 1825, BAPTIST BEULAH CHAPEL-ST GEORGE IN THE EAST,STEPNEY,LONDON,ENGLAND
Parents:William Marshall, Louisa
(Source Familysearch.Org)

Now strangely GILBERT STOWELL Marcshall was Re-Baptised (if that is the correct term) age 16, 09 Feb 1842, St Decumanus, Decumanus, Somerset
Siblings Christened same day;
LOUISA GATCHELL Marshall age 12
FRANCIS Marshall age 8
HARRIET SARAH Marshall Baptised same Church 29 Dec 1828  and EMILY CECIL Marshall same Church 07 an 1827
+ EMILY Marshall, 29 Sept 1842 (Birth 09 Dec 1826), St Mary, Stogumber, Somerset
(Source FreeREG)

Name: Louisa Gatchel Hole
Spouse Name: William Marshall
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 27 Jan 1821
Parish: Lambeth St Mary
Borough:   Lambeth
Register Type: Parish Register
A Stowell Marshall was a Witness to the Marriage
(Source Anc.)

So could Gilbert Stowell Marshall c 1800 be born London and William c 1802 be his Brother?

Trish :)

He was also a convict transported in 1819 so unfortunately the timing doesn't fit. I had also found this family and i've been trying to somehow tie it to mine
