Hi and welcome to Rootschat

To enable us to help you - could you give full details of the particular Bridgart family you are researching - names/birthyears etc

Please do not give details of anybody still living

Could you also tell us what info you already have in the way of census/BMD so we don't duplicate

Am searching for the line back from great grand father Samuel Ebenezer Bridgart.  Have his marriage certificate to Elizabeth Twelves in 1872 but dont have any information prior to that date.  His daughter Ethel (b 1879) was my grandmother. Also interested in any information about Elizabeth Twelves.

The 1881 census shows they were both b 1849.  Samuel in Derby and Elizabeth in Brampton

This is the 1851 entry for Samuel in Derby St Werburgh

Anne Bridgart 40 married b Duffield
Samuel  2 b Derby
Emma   11 Months b Derby
Phoebe Clark 19 servant

What is Samuel's fathers name and occupation on the 1872 marriage cert as I cannot find a male Bridgart marriage in Derbyshire between 1841-1851

Births Jun 1848
Samuel Ebenezer Bridgart    Derby  19 583

Births Jun 1850
Emma Maria Bridgart     Derby  19 641

The marriage cert shows his father as John Bridgart, joiner (Samuel was a grocer). Married in Independent Chapel Roth Moor Side Walton 21.10.1872 to Elizabeth Twelves whose father is shown as Simon Twelves, moulder.
Just received you message 'no father in 1861' - how very strange considering the information on the marriage certificate.

There is a comment on a tree on Ancestry to the effect that:

John Bridgart, b 1787 Derby, d 3 June 1868 Adelaide, Australia
m Ann Walters, bap 1810, Belper

possibly 1 May 1845, at Gretna?

No sources mentioned, except the comment mentions an email from another Ancestry user.

The 1861 census simply doesn't show a father! Neither does the 1851 census?!
Just means that he wasn't at home on the nighth of the census.

By 1891 Samuel is a widower and sister Emma - unmarried is living with him

(Funnily enough - there is an 1841 entry for a Samuel Bridgart - wife Ann - and that Samuel is a journeyman joiner.)

I suspect both children were illegitimate as there is no marriage or death for a John Bridgart.  You may need to buy a copy of Samuel's birth cert
