Many thanks to both ev and to Anne. I think with both your help I have pieced this alll together.
The strange word does very much look like Divoties, which I see is an area of Polmont where the poorer families lived. This may well have applied to this family.
With regard to John Tripney, Anne's theory of there being 3 Johns may well be true.
Birth/Baptism records show a John Tripney born 4 Jul 1831 and another John born 28 Sep 1837, both with the same parents. The Death record is for 29 Aug 1838 so could be for either one of them.
The John Tripney I have in my tree could have been born after this death. I have not been able to find a Birth record for him but it is possible it was never registered. Several things support this. In all Censuses from 1841 to 1901 his is listed as being born about 1838 or 1839. His Marriage record in 1870 gives his age as 31, which would make hom born about 1839. Having followed his life through the Censuses, I know he died in Chorlton, Lancashire about 1909. He lived there in 1901 Census. I haven't got a copy of the Death record but the Index shows his birth as about 1837.
I think the above is as close to the truth as I can get.
So thanks both of you for your help. This really did puzzle me.
