Re John Tripney, Polmont c. 1837
« on: Wednesday 28 March 12 16:37 BST (UK) »
I am researching my family tree and the name John Tripney. On Scotlandspeople I have found John Tripney born June 1831 and also born Sep 1837. Same parents for both entries. I asume the first one died and a second son born was also named John. I have also found in the OPR Deaths on Scotlandspeople, a record for Mortcloth, name of John Tripney  29 Aug 1838, Parish of Polmont. After the name is a word that appears to be a reference to a place and looks like "Darlies". Does anyone have an idea where this might be, a farm or hamlet name perhaps?

Many thanks for both replies. I have already found this family on Ancestry and it is definitely the family I am looking at. The 1841 Census shows an address of Bennetstone in the Parish of Polmont. The DEath record on Scotlandspeople which is a Mortcloth record is also  in Polmont Parish. Information I have found on Family Search tells me that from 1806, Death records were records of Mortcloths.
I haven't been able to establish exactly where Bennetstone was nor have I found anywhere on old maps resembling the rather odd word which I mentioned, a place name, which looks like "Darilies" .
I just wondered if possible someone might be able to give me any information based on their own knowledge of the area.
As I said, any help would be appreciated. It looks as if there were 2 John Tripney's born to the same parents.I have found both Birth records on Scotlandspeople. But as always, finding a record of a death is much more difficult.
Many thanks
Isabel

Hi Isabel,

Something's not quite right .....  :-\

If one John was born in 1831, then another born in 1837, and you have a death in 1838, then the second one must also have died as it's not likely to call another child by the same name if the first one was still alive.

Maybe there was a third John? Not particulary unusual - I've seen this on gravestones a few times where there's children continually called the same name.

Ancestry transcriptions state born 'circa', not an exact year - possibly the one 'ev' found was born late in the same year as the other wee soul died?

Anne  :)

Meant to say .....

Have a look here: http://www.polmontold.org.uk/hist1845part04.html

This is the web page for Polmont Old Parish Chuch, but there's mentions of Bennetston.

Looking at the link that Anne has provided could "Darlies" be Divoties ?  :-\

Many thanks to both ev and to Anne. I think with both your help I have pieced this alll together.
The strange word does very much look like Divoties, which I see is an area of Polmont where the poorer families lived. This may well have applied to this family.
With regard to John Tripney, Anne's theory of there being 3 Johns may well be true.
Birth/Baptism records show a John Tripney born 4 Jul 1831 and another John born 28 Sep 1837, both with the same parents. The Death record is for 29 Aug 1838 so could be for either one of them.
The John Tripney I have in my tree could have been born after this death. I have not been able to find a Birth record for him but it is possible it was never registered. Several things support this. In all Censuses from 1841 to 1901 his is listed as being born about 1838 or 1839. His Marriage record in 1870 gives his age as 31, which would make hom born about 1839. Having followed his life through the Censuses, I know he died in Chorlton, Lancashire about 1909. He lived there in 1901 Census. I haven't got a copy of the Death record but the Index shows his birth as about 1837.
I think the above is as close to the truth as I can get.
So thanks both of you for your help. This really did puzzle me.
