1907 inquest
« on: Wednesday 28 March 12 08:15 BST (UK) »
I've just found out from chatting with my great aunt that her aunt died aged three from burning to death from matches. I will send for her death certificate but if there was an inquest where would I find it.
Her name was Lilian Chandler and she died in 1907. Her parents were samuel and Ellen and they lived in Southwark. Any advice would be appreciated,

Sarah

The inquest papers will have been destroyed.
A newspaper report would be a good bet.

As Pauline says, a newspaper report would be a good bet.

If you bought the death cert you'd get the exact date of death which would make a request for a newspaper lookup easier.

Thank you both, I know its the jan/feb/march qtr of 1907. I'll have to send for the death cert. I've tried looking at the newspapers online but i've got nowhere so far. Thanks

Hi,

You might be lucky;  I found an Inquest file from 1902.   :)

If there was an Inquest the name of the Coroner will be on the certificate;  you can then search to see if his records are held in London/Surrey archives.

Good Luck!

You would need to look in local newspapers and the relevant Records office/archive or library service would be able to advise on which ones are most likely.  Most local papers' archives are not online.
