Birth Registration - HENRY LIONEL DAY
« on: Tuesday 27 March 12 22:35 BST (UK) »
My grandfather Henry Lionel Day first marriage 01/02/1901 and  Lionel Henry Day according to his second marriage certificate was 37 on  01/02/1913.  His father was Henry Lionel Day, deceased, and a sawyer on both marriage certificates.  Census return says born Ipswich.  There are a lot of Henry Days on the Ipswich census'.  My grandfather was orphaned aged + - 12.  I would be grateful if anyone could help me to find the right Henry/Lionel and advise me on how to obtain the birth certificate to further my research into my paternal forbears.

Using the birthdate c1876 +/- 5 years from 2nd marriage cert this census entry  looks good. He is the only one born Ipswich in that time period.
1881 RG11/1871/58/8
Henry Day 28 wood sawyer born Ipswich
Sarah wife 28 Westleton Suffolk
Henry 4 Ipswich
Sarah 2 Ipswich
Mary Ann Bennett Boarder widow 72 Halston

Using the reg info found by CaroleW you can specify the names of the parents if you wish, when ordering the cert..

You have Henry Lionel with his uncle and aunt George and Maria Steggell in 1891?
RG12/1471/10/14
ancestry has him as Leonel H Day! I have put in a correction.

It looks like his sister Sarah was in the orphanage RG12/1470/118/33

Yes this is the information I had found, I had wondered about the Leonel H Day too.  Would you buy the birth certificate on this information? Also how would I find which orphanages were in the Ipswich area? Could it be a poor house do you think?

Hi

If the details given by crisane prove to be correct then:

Henry DAY, a Sawyer of Fore Hamlet, Ipswich St Clement, died on 15 Aug 1884 & was buried Ipswich Cemetery 19 Aug 1884 age 32. (Source:  Suffolk Burial Index).  This ties in with his abode on the 1881C - 117 Fore Hamlet, Ipswich St Clement.

Sarah DAY appeared to be alive in 1891 (RG12/1469/21/36
living Willoughby Road Railway Mews Coffee Rooms, St Mary Stoke, Ipswich.  Widow age 39 born Westleton.  Manager of a Refreshment Room.  Living with her are daughters Elizabeth 16 (Assist in Refreshment Room) & Margaret 7 (Scholar) both born Ipswich.

Elizabeth is also on the 1881C age 6 with parents Henry & Sarah, siblings Henry 4 & Sarah 2.

Perhaps Henry was with his grandparents in 1891 because Sarah was busy working.

At a quick glance I couldn't find Sarah in 1901 though so she may have remarried, died, etc?

Marriage:  Henry Day Dec Qtr 1873 Ipswich Ref 4a/1429 & on the same page Sarah Hakon.

1861C Westleton - RG9/1179/57/21:
Sarah HACON age 9.  Parents John HACON 47 & Maria 43

I have Henry marrying 03/02/1901 Elizabeth Ann Hodgson in the Peckham area of London. A witness at their marriage was Daisy Ann KEZIA Marsh. I had never heard of this forename before seeing the certificate. Now a Kezia is offering me information. Wow.

Lovely old name Kezia/h.

I have just missed a talk to the WI on Hope House.

I am hoping  ;) that another local group will invite the speaker so that I may get to hear all about Hope House in Ipswich.

Pat ...
