Enoch HAMPTON death 1915 - lookup request
« on: Tuesday 27 March 12 20:51 BST (UK) »
Would anyone be able to look up a death certificate at Sandwell archives please:

Enoch HAMPTON born Woodsetton 1841 died 1915 (I think). Parents Joseph HAMPTON  and Elizabeth PARKES. I have seen on FreeBMD a death for an Enoch Hampton registered at Dudley in 1915 and I am hoping this is the right year for my Enoch.

I am not sure what information would be on a death certificate at that time but hope it will give me something more to go on. His wife was Mary Ann ?? - I have not been able to find a marriage for them and do not know her surname yet.

Thank you in anticipation.

I'm afraid you can't see the details on a death certificate without buying it.   :(

The certificate will show the deceased's age, occupation, address and cause of death, as well as the informant's name and address.

(Not relevant in this case, but a married woman's death cert often says "wife/widow of..." and a child's cert "son/daughter of ...")

Hi Sandy

Unlike some marriage registers, the registers for births and deaths are kept at the register office not the archives.

The only way you'll see a copy is to purchase it from the General Register Ofice at Southourt (www.gro.gov.uk) or the register office.

If he was buried locally, you may find an entry in a burial register but details will be sparse.

Death certificates of that time have little genealogical information in them. All you'll get is the date and place of death, the name and age but not date of birth, the occupation of the deceased, the cause of death and the name and address of the informant.

Thanks Rambler and Dawn for your replies.

Would the archives have a record of a death, rather than the certificate, and details of a marriage too?  I need a death date and his wife's maiden name to be able to proceed a bit more.

Having looked at the BMD indexes and the censuses, there are very few Enoch Hamptons and only one born circa 1841/1842.

The death in 1915 with an age of 75 would seem to be correct.

On the 1871 census, his wife is named as Ann and there is a possible marriage in 1862 between Enoch Hampton and Ann Stokes.

The birth certificate of one of their children would give you her maiden surname.

The local archives could most probably help with the marriage if you were able to tell them which church it took place in, but not if you only have a quarter and registration district.

You're in luck - the Hampton-Stokes marriage is on the Wolverhampton Archives site http://www.wolverhamptonhistory.org.uk

Enoch HAMPTON (20, miner), son of Joseph HAMPTON (miner) married Ann STOKES (21), daughter of Daniel STOKES (greengrocer) at St Peter, Wolverhampton on 22 December 1862.

Thanks once again Rambler & Dawn

I have a bit more to go on now and hopefully can progress further.  What a stroke of luck the marriage being online!
