Buffard/Bovis in Sussex
« on: Tuesday 17 May 05 09:48 BST (UK) »
Help! I am trying to research the Buffard family of Guestling, Sussex. On the IGI there are lots of entries for people listed as "Buffard or Bovis" or in one case "Buffard or Bovis or Beaufort". Does anyone have any idea of the link between the names Bovis and Buffard, or why the entries were made like this?

I am trying to find the parents of Thomas Buffard born around 1777 (married Sarah Gain in 1803). I have found a Thomas Bovis (mother Mary Bovis) born in Guestling at the right time and am starting to wonder if this is my Thomas Buffard?

It's all too confusing for me and if anyone can shed any light on things I would be eternally grateful.

Many thanks! ??? ???

Jane

Hi Jane,
I don't know if this will help but there is a website that helps in these things, genealogyforum.com  They have a file containing bufford and bovis. All depends how desperate you are.I had the same problem with whittington/whiteington/wittington but it was all the same family.

Best Wishes

Hi Jane,
Checked the Sussex marraige index to see if I could find a connection through marriage to the two names, but no luck.  It would appear that the two names are separate families, but both have marriage's in Guestling of the dates you mentioned.  The name BEAUFORT or BEAUFORD does not appear on the index.
Not a very positive response, but might be of some help.  If you want the Guestling marriages just let me know,

Jane

Hello Jane

Thanks very much for checking the marriage index for me. I may well want marriage details as I (hopefully) unearth a few more facts so I might come back to you on that later – thanks for the offer.

I found a post on another website which stated that Thomas Bovis became Thomas Buffard but unfortunately it was an old post and the e-mail address no longer works. Thomas Bovis and his two siblings are all listed as "base born" so the obvious conclusion would be that their father was a Buffard and they took on his name. However, the "Buffard or Bovis" entries in the IGI go back 80 years before their births, so it's not that simple! (Never is, is it?)

Thanks very much for your efforts.

Jane
