Army Photo for Dating
« on: Monday 26 March 12 22:12 BST (UK) »
Could anyone please date these picture and possibly confirm regiment, I have a number of pictures all taken about the same time but not sure of date. The pictures are in an album and I have not been able to see the backs. The gentleman is my wife's Granddad 1883 to 1955. I know for certain that he enlisted in the 1st WW on the 28 Dec 1914 and was discharged on the 31st Dec 1914 " "being no longer physically fit......". I also know that by profession he was a Baker and in other pictures he is stood inside and outside camp Cookhouse. Apart from the information regarding his 1914 enlistment and discharge I can't find any other documents relating to him being in the Army.

Hi Roy and welcome to Rootschat,

Both images would be from the 1st ww period and although there is nothing that I can see that would say which regiment the first soldier served with the second does give some clues. The sergeant on the left appears to have been serving with the Kings Regiment when this was taken, a high res' image of just his cap badge may confirm this, but I am always open to be corrected. If you were to place a link on the armed forces board, or if a mod would move it over to there for you, you may get more answers and help.

What was his name by the way.

Thanks OR, I did not expect a response so fast. I have tried, as you suggested, to get a better image of the cap badge but not sure if it will do. As a matter of interest his enlistment papers were for the Lancs. Fusiliers. I am not sure how to create a link to another forum but will have a further look tomorrow and give that a go.

Good evening'

The cap badge is not at all clear but I would say not the Lancashire Fusiliers. Most likely to be the Warwickshire Fusiliers or the Kings (Liverpool);

They are both wearing the cap badge of the Kings Liverpool Regiemnt. The Sergeant is wearing an econony patterm tunic (no pleats on the breast pockets) worn c1915-16. They acquired more material and returned the pleats later in the war.

Nothing to indicate the battalion, except that it wasn't the Liverpool Irish, Liverpool Scottish, Liverpool Rifles or the four battalions of the Liverpool Pals.

Morning Ken, thanks for confirming my thoughts on this re the regiment, The Kings Liverpool Regiment was what I had intended to put up on here but my fingers on the keyboard need catching up with the brain lol.

Thank you for your observations I must say I am very impressed with the knowledge that people have relating to these issues down to being able to date the uniform.

As William (full name William James Dinwoodie) came from Liverpool it would now seem obvious that it was the Kings Liverpool Regiment but I am still at a loss regarding his original enlistment then discharge within days from the Lancs Fusiliers if he then went on to serve later in the in the Kings Liverpool Regiment. I know he was a cook and we do have some other pictures of him outside the Cook house but I can not find on any of the Ancestry websites any enlistment papers? There is a record for a W J Dinwoodie in the Boar War but I feel that this is not him as he would be about 18/19. Any thoughts?

Thanks again
Roy

Roy,

You can down load his medal card for a small fee from the national archives, this may well be him below,

OR you are a star, Before starting this thread I had tried a number of seaches to locate William James with no success. I had already found papers on Ancestry but as I have already said it shows him being enlisted then discharged within days as unfit. Having the photos which only came to light the other week (and that's was due to a chance conversation with a lady who saw me taking pictures of where he used to live in Liverpool) made me think that he had to have served for longer than 3 days. Based on your information I did another quick search and have found on Ancestry a Medals Roll Index card for the  William James Dinwoodie you found, I will now get the Medical Record which I hope will confirm that it is out William James. I will also continue to see if I can find his enlistment papers now that I have a Reg No.

Thanks,
Roy
