Baptism look up in Stoke Gifford Please
« on: Monday 26 March 12 20:03 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I was wondering if someone could kindly find a baptism for a Emma Merrick born around 1810 in Stoke Gifford.
She married a James Bath in 1826 in Stoke Gifford and in census records it states her place of birth as Stoke Gifford.

Many Thanks
 :)

Hi there

I did find a Emma Merrick on some peoples trees.
States she was born in 1809 at Filton, which is a couple of
miles from Stoke Gifford. They also have her marrying James.

I cant seem to find the exact christening so dont know who
her parents are.
Did find a possible couple in Stoke Gifford.
They have a lot of children but no Emma, although they have
a Hannah, Ann, Mary, Ruth and Elizabeth plus alot of boys.
So dont know if Emma was a nick name?
The parents are called Thomas Merrick and Love I think her maiden
name was Lewis.
I noticed that a few of the daughters of Emma and James have
the same names as these apart from a Ruth.

Hello

Many thanks for that.
I have thought before of the possibility that Emma was a daughter of Thomas and Love but would love confirmation.
So i will keep looking  :)

Hello Again Sandymc

An update on Emma Merrick.

I have still have not found a record of her baptism however i ordered a birth certificate for one of her children Syndra Bath (my 2 x Great Grandfather) and the details of the informant were Love Rodway Aunt present at birth.
So its seems Emma is niece of Love Merrick (daughter of Thomas Merrick and Love Lewis).Love Merrick b 1793 married a James Rodway in 1813.
Now all i need to figure out is who's daughter is she.Thomas and Love had several children as you said before but all the sons seem a bit young to have a daughter (Emma) born around 1809-1811.So i think she may be a illegitimate offspring from one of the older daughters of Thomas and Love that is either Mary b 1789 or Anne b 1790

I will keep looking but any info from anyone would be most appreciated  :)

Hi Molly

Forgot all about this from March.  Pleased that you are progressing in the searching.
Its such an unusual name Love, that it must be a relation.
Information on line is being added all of the time so hope you
manage to find all the people you want to.
It is not unusual for the Grandparents to record a child
of their children as their own.  I have two in my families and
it was the daughters in both cases.  I think it also happened
because the children were born one after another it was easy
to "hide" another one at the end of the line laugh.
Good luck and thanks for the update.

regards Sandymc

UPDATE

Its been over three years since my last post about Emma Merrick and I am still looking for her baptism and parents!!!

I have trawled yet again through the parish registers and found a couple of possibilities but wanted the advice and you all on here  :)

So number one - I found a baptism of an Emma Meret daughter of Anne base born baptised 27/07/1817. Could this be her with the name spelt wrong or wrongly transcribed as it might fit with her Aunt being Love Rodway formerly Love Merrick as Love had a sister called Anne born 1790.However the date is not a good fit as Emma married in 1826 unless this Emma was baptised as a young child in 1817 not as a baby.Emma has had her birth date listed as anything from 1809 to 1811.

Number two - I found a baptism of an Emma Merrett daughter of John Merrett and Maria baptised 17/11/1811 in Almondsbury . I know the name is not Merrick but maybe again a mis spelt name or maybe she was a Merrett not Merrick but then how does that fit with her Aunt being Love Rodway formerly Merrick.Love did have a brother called John but he would have been too young to have a daughter born in 1811.However the area and date fits as Almonsbury was in the chapelry of Northwick which included Almondsbury,Henbury,Aust and Olverston.Emma has been listed as being born in Henbury and Stoke Gifford and they are all within a few miles of each other.

I guess another thought could be that Love was actually her mother not her Aunt as Love was unmarried at the time of Emma's birth but was married to James Rodway in 1813 just two years later.

This is proving to be such a headache and any fresh ideas on where to look and any fresh thoughts would be appreciated
