Whooley/Mahony
« on: Monday 26 March 12 18:28 BST (UK) »
Hi there wonder if someone could tell me please where I could find a marriage for Bridget Whooley, and a William Mahony I have found children Richard born in Bantry approx 1851 which I already know about and have just found his sister Mary born about 1842 in Bantry.  I am also not sure if they had another son called James.  Found them on the irish genealogy site.

Thank you I thought there was a James but wasn't quite sure and now have added Patrick also to my family tree.  No hopefully I might get some hope finding the marriage records.

I had a quick search for a possible marriage in Bantry and the other South west Cork RC parishes included on IrishGenealogy - but didn't see any promising results. Although the surname - Whooley cropped up a few times. Not a surname I've come across before...

There is this marriage http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/bde8d30011174

Do you have dates for them? Is this too early?

Hi there no it might not be too early for them their first born James was born in 1836 Bantry. It quite could possibly be them.  Thankyou I haven't got DOB for them both the only records I have got is off Irish geanology website.

here's the image for that marriage - I can see why there was difficulty transcribing it...

Yes, handwriting not great there but also differences in how the name is pronounced even within Co Cork don't help (phonetic spellings Hooly and Whelly). Was just having a look there and there are a good few variations in spelling on IrishGenealogy for it.

I have just been having a look myself and its interesting that both witnesses to the marriage are both James and even witnesses looks like the surname is different way of spelling it.
