John Oswald Glasgow to USA
« on: Monday 26 March 12 17:45 BST (UK) »
Could someone kindly check to see what info there is about a John Oswald departing Glasgow in 1899 bound  for the USA (New York) ?
Also does anyone know how to check marriage records in Canada for the said John Oswald marrying a Margaret King?
Any help would be much appreciated.

New York passenger lists from that time are available free with registration at www.ellisisland.org.  You can see the manifest, so it should give you more details about him.

I couldn't find him on the Ellis Island site - only on FindMyPast

There are 3 1891 Scottish entries for his name born 1854/55 - one was b Auchterarder, Perthshire and was living in Glasgow in 1891 - appears to be a widower.  Children were all b Glasgow

Thankyou to you both. I have found a John Oswald in the 1891 canadian census(Quebec) with Margaret (wife) & Hellen (daughter). Both adults were scottish & I was trying to find where this John Oswald was born, hence was looking at the passenger lists to see when they came over . But they are not there in 1901 canadian census.
Thanks

Hi Silvercraig,

Looking at the 1891 Canadian Census - can see a John, Margaret and Hellen in Deux Montagnes district.  This John was born Quebec 1857 (parents - Scotland), Margaret 1863 (Father Scotland and Mother - Quebec) and Hellen born in Quebec 1889. Is this the one ?

In 1911 this family (with one more child Donald born 1894 Quebec) were at Jay Street, Vankleek Hill, Ontario

John Oswald Aged 54 years was a farmer.  Born Quebec.  Margaret Oswald 49
Helen Oswald 20  and Donald Oswald 17
Cam Miller 12 Nephew.
