Fitzroy - Killinchy/Comber
« on: Friday 23 March 12 10:07 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather was William James Finlay Fitzroy and his parents were James Fitzroy & Margaret Finlay from Killinchy.

William married a Margaret Jane Bell and they had 3 daughters, Gretta, Betty and Ida May (who was my grandmother).  At this time I believe William James worked as a joiner for Harland & Wolf in Belfast and I was always led to believe that he actually worked on the Titanic when it was being built.

My grandmother (Ida May) was born in 1921 in Clara Avenue in Belfast.  The family moved to Comber sometime thereafter.

I know my great grandfather, William James Finlay Fitzroy, had several siblings but I know absolutely nothing about them and would be grateful if anyone has any information about the Fitzroy family.

Thanks.

This might be William, a joiner, in 1911 around the time the Titanic was being built. 3 siblings show.

Plus most of the family in 1901:

That would appear to be him as the dates all tie in perfectly! I'd read on a previous posting of a William James born Jan 1882, which would make him 28 by the time of the 1911 census. The joiner/carpenter element in 1911 fits in too with the Titanic connection. Thanks!

The 1911 census details a lot of Fitzroy siblings - wonder what happened to them all.

I know of a Madge, who we always called Aunt Madge, even though she must have been my granny's (Ida May) cousin, possibly a daughter of Thomas Fitzroy, but other than that I know absolutely nothing about the siblings.

I'd love to know how William met Margaret Bell and what took them to Comber, Co Down sometime after my granny, Ida May, was born.

William James Fitzroy’s marriage to Margaret Jane Bell was registered in Belfast Oct – Dec 1911, Volume 1, page 404. Her father’s name was James. If you get their marriage certificate, that may given you an address which will enable you to trace her family in the censuses.

Hi,
There appears to have been an earlier Comber connection in the family. On 8 Jun 1876 James Fitzroy married Margaret Finlay in Comber Second Presbyterian Church. The fathers names were George Fitzroy and John Finlay.

Thanks for that, I had no idea that William & Margaret had had a stillborn child, this means my granny (Ida May Fitzroy) would have had a brother! She never mentioned it, I wonder if she knew.

Hi kingskerwell & thanks for your reply, seems like James Fitzroy & Margaret Finlay were parents of my great grandfather, William James Finlay Fitzroy. This would explain the Comber connection.
