THE BUCHOLZ FAMILY

Generation One

1.   Johann Bucholz, b. 1839 in Poland, d. 4 Aug 1926 in Seacliff Mental Hospital.  The family were Roman Catholic.

Ship the Palmerston bought the family from Germany to NZ
Departed Hamburg  Germany 28 July 1872
Arrived Port Chalmers New Zealand 6 December 1872

Johann was granted citizenship 30 July 1902

   Otago Daily Times , Issue 8960, 12 November 1890, Page 4
Cattle Wandering Daniel Wadsworth was charged, on the information of John Buobolz, with allowing a bull to wander on the private property of the informant, at Mount C.argill, on November 3.  Mr W. A. Stout appeared on behalf of the Informant. John Bucholz gave evidence that about 6.30 on the morning of Monday, Sovember 3, he Baw the bull grazing on his property. The latter was fenced all round with a three-barred fence. He also saw the animal on the. main Blueskin road, no one being in charge of it. The bull was a dangerous one, and people were afraid to pass it. Last month he saw it regularly on the road grazing, It was never tethered. Alexander Reid, residing at Mount Carglll, said that on Monday morning of last week, he saw the bull on Mr Bucholz's land. It was grazing, but was not tethered.; Witness saw it again on the evening of that day grazing on the roadside. He saw the bull rush at two women, who were afraid to pass It. Mrs Wadsworth told witness that it was their bull, about a month ago. Defendant said he had no cattle at all, and did not possess a bull. He could have brought several witnesses to prove this, but thought it unnecessary and in view of these circumstances he asked the bench to postpone the further hearing of the case until such time as he could procure these witnesses. The bench declined to accede to this request, and fined defendant 10a and costs.

Extract from "Mataura Ensign 20 Nov 1937" a talk about the old days.  (this refers to Johan Bucholz)
One of the Germantown settlers who married a woman too young for his age and never hit the jackpot of married happiness and became so mental that his wife told him to drown himself out of the way.   The unfortuate man tried to oblige his wife but chose to sit on the gravel beach of the Mataura river near where Townsends crusher is now for most of the day.
Mr D Whytock who lived on the opposite side of the river notified Sergeant Fleming of the Gore police.  He and the official court bailiff drover over the combined railway and road bridge to East Gore and up to where the man was sitting with his pockets filled with stones.  The Sergeant asked him what he was doing there and the unfortunate man replied his wife had told him to go and drown himself so he was sitting there waiting for the tide to come in and carry him away.  The Sergeant who was a son of Old Ireland replied in an amusing way "Well me fine boy ye will wait a long time there for the tide to come - we will take ye to a place where the tide will come in much faster"  So they took him to a Dr Named Copeland who certified him as insane and sent him to the Seacliff Mental Hospital where he spent the rest of his life until the final tide came in and took him away from living death.

Hello my friends! And thanks for this information. I'm here, because im trying to research about my great grandfather(d. 1995). He told us, that he was from New Zealand, and we know he changed his name at the middle 1920's or 30's. But we know, that his real name was Adam Bucholz. Just like one of the Johann Buchholz sons. And his birth date(march 10) matches too. I would be very happy if you could help me a little with this. Many thanks!!!!
