Thomas Stayt

My great, great grandfather, Thomas Stayt, was a butler working in several large houses in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. He was born (according to later Census returns) in Icombe, Gloucestershire in 1816. He married Hannah Smith from Stow on the Wold around 1836. I have been unable to find anything about either his or his wife's birth or their marriage. (They appear with their children in the 1851 Census onwards) I have even been in touch with Stayt family researchers who say they don't appear on their Stayt family tree. Can anyone help please.

On 28th August 1794 at St Mary's Icomb a William Stayt of Lower Swell married a Mary Hambridge. Possible parents?
I have possibly found the marriage of one of Thomas Stayt's sons. At Claines Worcestershire on 17th April 1865 a Carlton Stayt, batchelor and farmer of Grimley married a Mary Ann Griffiths. Carlton's father was a Thomas Stayt who was a butler. Mary Ann's father was a shoemaker named Richard Griffiths

Have you tried variations of the spelling of the surname? A John STAIT married an Elizabeth Leachbury at Icomb on 30th October 1782. Plus the surname Staite appears in Worcestershire parish records

Thanks for the info but the William Stayt married to Mary Hambridge appears on the Stayt family tree which I mentioned. Their son Thomas was born in 1798 and is linked to the tree owners family. The tree owner has done a lot of research and I have no reason to doubt his findings. I attach a copy for your interest. I have also checked other spellings of Stayt which do occur. Thomas spent most of his life in Worcestershire and his sons and daughters were born there. Do you have access to Gloucestershire records? They do not seem to be on line.

OK, I think I've found Thomas and Hannah on the 1851 census: both living in Ampney Crucis but Thomas with his employer and Hannah and children elsewhere in the village? Correct?
If so, then I think I've found them in 1841 too. You don't say you've got that one. If you want it, let me know.

To Victor Harvey
Thank you for the information. I think 1813 may be too early. All the census '51, '61, '71 and death state his birth was 1817.
