Work House Records
« on: Thursday 22 March 12 00:58 GMT (UK) »
Have come to a dead end with my great grandmother EMILY BOUCHER.  She was an inmate of WEST BROMWICH UNION WORK HOUSE in 1900 when she had my grandfather WILLIAM BOUCHER JULY 1900 - he was illegitimate and on his birth certificate Emily is listed as a General Servant/Cook in Handsworth.  I have sent for Emily's Death Certificate but it has no date of birth or what her father's name was, she never married so we are stuck now as to how to find her parents etc.....all I know is she is listed as being 85 but that may be wrong.  Would anyone know please if there are records from the Workhouse or GREENSIDE WAY OLD PEOPLE'S HOME, WALSALL/WEST BROMWICH (now closed down) or even if HALLAM HOSPITAL, WEST BROMWICH would have records of her being and dying there.  There are a great many Emily Bouchers !  :(  We had done a lot of research but have now found we were on the wrong track grrrr!!
Thank you :-*

There's some good information about the workhouse here

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/WestBromwich/

though it does say that the location of any surviving records is uncertain.

Re info on  Old Peoples Homes and the like as distinct from Workhouses, the Local Studies Library nearest to there may be able to point you where to look.

Just a thought.

Hello is the william boucher in 1901 census born 1900 in west brom described as a visitor age 8 months living in lyndon west bromwich him? Strange enough he's with a john and emily williams. Think it must be him and if you have n't looked at 1911 for him, you my want to look at it.  It may be worth looking at church records for the baptism, all saints west bromwich is up the road , there are a few others local and quite a few of the little non conformist churches, how much info would be in i don't know.

Thank you Weste - yes that's my grandad, we have got that info but it's Emily who is the stumbling block as we have nothing to go on as to which Emily she is out of ALL the Emily Bouchers that flag up...... only the area (Midlands) and even then there are loads.  We just don't have any info as to where born, parents names just that she was 85'ish when she died.  I remember her vaguely as I was about 8 when she died in 1961 and she was lovely and I so so wish I could talk to her now as she must have had a very hard life (as did most in those days I know) and I find it so sad that she registered my grandad's birth when she had just had him in the Workhouse and he registered her death in '61. I think it was the Matron or someone who found the home for Grandad and luckily he did keep in touch with Emily.  What lovely kind people the Williams at Lyndon must have been?

Thank you Charlotte - I will give them a try too!

Have you tried tracking emily boucher age 25 born in langley in the 1901 census, she is a servant in kings norton.  She was born about 1876? I can see like you say there's a lot to track.  One part of our family we had to build a database. It will be a cae of elimination more than likely.
