I know of Dabneys in Ontario (one visited us in Ireland but don't think we discussed family origin). So, I went to Family Search, put in 'dabney' as surname and #ontario' as place. Then selected births in U.K. then 'ireland'- only 7 results-
A Mary Daboney born c1805 Co. Tipperary, Ireland

A Bessie Debney born c1891 Ireland

A Maggie Daubney born in Ireland (daughter Julie Brennan born c1821 Ireland)
     https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JXNM-3MC
A Robert Daubney born c1885 Ireland

A James Dabnay born Ireland (son James born 1890 Detroit, Michigan)
     https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP71-733S
Other two results not relevant.

Thank you for your kind reply, the surname is definitely DEBNEY, perhaps he originated in Engand, certainly somewhere in the UK but not, it seems, Ireland, although I believe he was born there, in Galway.
His mother wasd Irish for sure, Margaret Fallon. many thanks, Whisky

It's only fairly recently that spelling of names became standardised but even now different branches might use different spellings. The Irish are especially good at variations of both Christian and surnames and it's not uncommon to find old documents with more than one spelling applied to the same person on the one page.

Where does this information come from? Are the parents and placename on John’s Australian records?

Griffiths Valuation shows a Thomas Dibney in Caherlissakill ,Monivea parish, Galway

In Tithe Applotment records, however, there is a Michael Diveny there.

Yes, amount on Australian records, he went to Adelaide in South Australia, and eventually ended up in Victoria, I did get some records from South Australia, personally, and have visited the cemetary in Victoria where he is buried, the local history records were good.

Thank you. I hope you don’t mind my repeating the question -
I meant are there definite records which specify his parents as Gregory Debney and Margaret Fallon and his place of birth as Galway. Or has that information just been passed down through his family.

Hello again, I originally found his records on Ancestry, and Australian records here.  Records here show he was on a ship and hopped off in Adelaide.
Thanks again for your interest. Whisky

Thanks.
I saw the records later in a published tree.
If that is John on the ‘Queen of Sheba’ in 1852, it mentions a wife and two children. It says, 1 male and 1 female child - although they are dittoed from the previous entry.
If that is Sarah, though, where are her other children?
I was just wondering if there are Adelaide birth/baptism records which might help.

As I understand it, John Debney's 2 daughters were born in Australia, Mary Ann and Emma.
I found the records of their birth I also found the records of John Debney's birth in Galway.
Just wish I could find more, thanks for your help though. Whisky
