I think it is the SA Observer

Possibly this one:

The Adelaide observer
Adelaide, S. Aust. : John Stephens, 1843-1904  Ref: The Observer 13 Jul 1907, p26, column 1

Will have a look when I'm next at the NLA which may not be till next week now.  Someone else may be able to find it earlier.  I suspect the South Australian state library would also hold copies.

I did have the NLA and State Library of SA do searches for me, but the article leads you astray in 1907 and also the one in the 40's as it doesn't say much at all that they could find, just that they arrived in the late 1840's and he died in 1850.

laterally thinking, would there have been a money trail??
State Library seems to think he paid his own way over privately as he was a man of means...Charles Cave Esq.
Would he have had a bank???
His business for the farm should be entered somewhere, thus his money also. ::)

How disappointing about the 1907 article  :(  It sounded like what we all dream about - a detailed description of his trip here.  The writer implied that he was just quoting a couple of snippets from a more detailed article.

Did you actually sight page 26 column 1?  I just wonder if the librarians missed it somehow  ???

As for the money-side - sounds a good idea but I wouldn't know where to start. No doubt some experts will come along shortly and suggest how.

cheers,
  Ros

Looking at 19th Century British newspapers there are a number of mentions of Charles Cave as an investment banker - similar to those already noted on TROVE.  This is not the same Charles CAVE.  The investment banker lived in Belgrave Sq London and was there well after the Somerset CAVE family had emigrated.

Had a look at this:
The Adelaide observer
Adelaide, S. Aust. : John Stephens, 1843-1904  Ref: The Observer 13 Jul 1907, p26, column 1
but it was a column about Pigeon Shooting and Homing Pigeons!

It is a weekly paper (58 pages on Saturday July 13, 1907) and has interesting snippets from all over southern South Australia.  I would guess that the item would be there somewhere but not on that date, coz I looked at every page.  :(  I could tell you who owned the hen that won the Rosewarnes egg-laying contest.  :D

I did look at the week before and the week after but no luck. It would be great to see it digitised as there is so much inormation.

It would appear that we are researching the same family. I'm interested in a granddaughter of William Rendall Cave who married a relative of mine. I won't name her because she may be still living.
