Newspapers for 1900 onwards in Newcastle.
« on: Saturday 17 March 12 17:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi  :)

Where would I find newspapers for 1900 onwards covering Newcastle ? Hopefully online but if not, where is the best place to visit to see them ?

I don`t live in the UK so I`m not really up on these things  ::)

Thanks

The British Library is the central repository - they will have 99% or more: http://www.bl.uk/aboutus/quickinfo/loc/colindale/index.html

However you are more likely to get help and explanation locally, try http://www.twmuseums.org.uk/archives/ and see what their website delivers; they are more likely to have indexes (if any)

Hope this helps

Hi,

Newcastle City Library have microfilm of the Evening Chronicle (don't think it's indexed, tho).

Is there anything specific you are looking for?

Regards,

Trini.

My membership of Newcastle Central Library allows me to access online British regional newspapers for C19th ( 1800-1900). For our area the newspapers covered include The Newcastle Courant. The Times of London is covered up to late 1900s.  All these searchable by keyword.

The library itself has hard copy and films of several local papers up to modern times, including
The Newcastle Chronicle, The Journal, etc.

Unfortunately there are no indexes for articles in the Chronicle and Journal.

Thanks for your replies  ;D

My G Grandmother Hannah Porter, died on 30th November 1909 at Elswick,  aged 39 and there are whisperings in the family that my G Grandfather Robert Porter, pushed her onto the fireplace, she hit her head and died, maybe a couple of weeks afterwards.  The cause of death on the cert is convulsions, paralysis and syncope.

I was hoping to be able to find 1909 newspapers online to see if I can find any mention of it as Robert Porter was a bit of a local `character` (by that I mean he was a bad boy   :o  )

I`m going to have to plan a trip to the Central Library aren`t I  ;D
