CROSS
« on: Saturday 17 March 12 08:33 GMT (UK) »
Charles CROSS died in Australia 1895.  According to all information he was b. abt. 1834 in North Quantoxhead, Somerset.

He apparently had a brother, Sidney, of which I have no details.

His parents were Charles CROSS and Mary WILCOX.

Can anyone assist with confirming details please?

Have you done any verification on parish records yourself? Eg WWW.familysearch.org? " Hugh wallis somerset" as a search string in an engine will take you straight to individual parishes.

Any indication of when he left the UK?

East and West Quantoxhead baptisms can be found here

http://www.wsom.org.uk/Parreg.html

There are no Crosses at East Q, several children to a Robert and Mary at West Q but no others (in the right period). I don't know of a North Quantoxhead.

FreeREG shows several children to a Charles and Mary Cross at Lydeard St Lawrence from 1830 on, including a Charles in 1835. No Sidney though.

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=8164310

A Charles Cross married Mary Simons at West Bagborough (4 miles from Lydeard St Lawrence) in 1829

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Marriages&RecordID=2874858

That's probably the Lydeard family, so if you're sure your Charles' mother was a Wilcox, it looks unlikely that they're his family. (Unless she was a widow. That would usually be shown on the marriage record, but mistakes do happen.)

Charles CROSS d. 2 April 1895 at Tallandoon in Victoria, Australia.

He married Harriot WILBUR in 1856 in Maryborough, Victoria.

His obit on 4th April 1895 states:

A resident of Tallandoon of some 30 yers, Mr. Charles Cross, died from heart disease on Tuesday.  Mr. Cross, universally respected, was one of the earliest of those who tried their fortunes at Yackandandah.  Charles became a member of the Road Board, rendered good service to his fellow ratepayers, and when the Board became the Shire of Towong he accepted a seat at the council table, for many years representing the Mitta Mitta Riding. (Ovens and Murray Advertiser)
So one would assume he arrived about 1865 however, I haven't been able to confirm that.

Death Vic Regn. #7401 states his parents were Charles CROSS and Mary WILCOX.

I have no details on his parents except their names.

Thank you everyone for your help.
One day I hope to confirm all details.

Jackie,
I am a descendant of James CROSS of Yackandandah (brother of Charles and son of Robert CROSS and Mary WILCOX of West Quantoxhead, Somerset).

If you have access to Mundia (registration is free), you can view the family of the CROSS/WILCOX family in the UK and Australia at the following link.
http://www.mundia.com/au/Tree/Family/10488630/-631778622#

If you are interested in the arrival and subsequent settlement of the CROSS family in Australia, you might want to visit the following thread in RootsChat.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,154901.msg4883495.html#msg4883495

As you can see from this the preceeding thread, Charles CROSS arrived in Sydney, Australia in 1848 on the ship "Emperor" with three of his sisters.

I trust that this information will be of some assistance to you.  :)
