Hi Vern

Just having another look at your post and wonder if we can help in any way to track down your elusive grandfather John William Prescott

I see Ellen was born 3.2.1880 according to her death reg.  There are a couple of candidates on freebmd whose births were registered in the March qtr 1880 - Ormskirk, Prescot and Wigan.  Suspect she is the Prescot birth

Were her parents Richard & Jane (nee Sherrington)

Can you tell us what info you already have on John William - birthyear/marriage etc.  I can see 3 possible births in Prescot in 1883/84/90

Thanks for the offer Carole.  I think I will need to wait for the 1921 census to find my grandfather.

Ellen and John William's mother was Ellen PRESCOTT who never married. She is on the 1891 and 1911 Censuses and claims to be a widow.  She misses the other census years.

Ellen senior had 6 children.  I have birth certificates for all of them. I have baptism for the first 3 that say the parents are James and Ellen, but the birth certificates indicate that Ellen was not married.  This is confirmed by other details. The children  are:

1   Name:   Ellen Prescott   F
Birth:   18   Jan 1872 in 18 Beatrice Street, Everton, Lancashire
Death:   12   Aug 1872 in 9 Back Beam Street, Everton, Lancashire

2   Name:   Elizabeth Ann Harrison Prescott  F
Birth:   06   Mar 1874 in 23 Lambert Street, Liverpool, England
Death:   11   May 1963 in 3 Chorley Road, Hilldale, Wrightington, Lancashire
Marriage:   18   Oct 1900 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England
Baptism:   21   Apr 1874 in St Peters, Liverpool
   Spouse:   Thomas Bourn

3   Name:   James Prescott M
Birth:   27   Jun 1875 in 3 Edge Hill Place, West Derby, Lancashire
   Death:   1929 in Liverpool
Marriage:   02   Nov 1897 in St Gabriel's, Toxteth Park
   Spouse:   Hannah Harriet Hughes

4   Name:   John William Prescott M
Birth:   19   Jun 1877 in 3 Edge Hill Place, West Derby, Lancashire, England
Marriage:   19   Jan 1897 in St Gabriel's Church, Toxteth Park
   Spouse:   Sarah Jane Stenson

5   Name:   Ellen Prescott   F
Birth:   03   Feb 1881 in 81 Railway Grove, Deptford, Kent, England
Death:   18   Mar 1971 in Liverpool, England

6   Name:   Alice Prescott   F
Birth:   10   Feb 1883 in 2 Court William Street, Toxteth Park, England
Death:   Dec 1970 in Liverpool, England

John William and Sarah Jane had 3 children.  Sarah Jane died of Typhoid in 1906 and John William left the kids in Liverpool and supposedly went to the United States and was never seen again.

However, there is a story that someone claimed to see him at his mother's funeral in 1938.  Also, my first cousin told me a few years ago that he had been thought to be in the US but they found him living with his sister.  Then there is the story that Ellen might have moved in with a brother.  Hence, my query regarding Hollywood Road.

I have been unable to find my grandfather in the US, nor have I been able to identify a death in England.  I have found a man that appears to be him on a passenger list about 1910, returning from the far east.  But, I can't say for sure that it is him.

Wowser - I can see your problem.  If only he had been given a more unusual name than John!!

This is a longshot and may be of no use whatsoever at the end of the day

Deaths September qtr 1938
Ellen Prescott  aged 85  Liverpool South  8b 79

Do you have her death cert - if yes - what was her actual date of death?

I wonder if there was an obituary notice for her in the local paper and whether it mentions John.   If he was dead/abroad by then - it may refer to him as "dec'd" or "USA"

As I said - it's a longshot!!

I have the death certificate and death notice, as well as burial information.

Death Certificate - Dated Sept 20, 1938
Sept 17, 1938 at 15 Crump Street, 85 Years old, Widow of James Prescott Able Seaman
Cause of Death: Myocarditis and bronchitis accelerated by bruising of the chest & ribs accidentally caused by falling in the kitchen on the 31st ultimo
Informant: Certificate received from G. C. Mort Coroner for Liverpool Inquest held Sept 19, 1938
-
Burial
Ellen was buried at Allerton Cemetery in Liverpool on Wednesday, September 21, 1938.  Her grave site is # 1168 in General Section 9, order # 42374.  There is no headstone and no one else is buried in the grave.  The owner of the grave is Alice Prescott.

As you can see there is no mention of my grandfather.

John William was a house painter at one point (probably worked for his father in law, Thomas Stenson who was a house painter).  He is also listed as a Fireman somewhere.  The person I found on the passenger list was a Fireman. I tried contacting the shipping line but they had no information.

Family legend has it that he went to New York and was painting ships on the docks in Brooklyn when he had a fall and was hospitalized.  He supposedly wrote to his mother for bith certificates of the children so he could claim compensation for dependants.  She did not respond, saying that he was never any good!!! Since the children were born 1899 - 1905, I assume this would have been about 1910 - 1915.

Closely knit family!
