Hi Carol,

It's possible that the names are misspelt as you say.  But I'm a bit concerned perhaps about the father's occupation not matching - Mariner vs Bricklayer.

I'll have a look at some alternatives - hopefully others will too.

How old was Mary on her marriage certificate?

Hi Jonathan,Mary was 19,  i am pretty sure it does say Mariner, I have had loads of people look at it, it is extremely 'curly' writing.
the French family she married into were dock carmen
Broomfield-Medway
Anderson-Upchurch, Lower Halstow Kent
White-Stepney
Stafford-Dublin
Herbert-Kilkenny
French-Stepney

Me again

I don't think this is the correct family Carol - which is good if we can rule them out.

In 1881 they are all still together with Mary at home.

47 Usher Rd, Bow

Elizabeth Bigmore abt 1808  Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England Mother in Law
Elizabeth Elder abt 1864  Stepney, Middlesex, England Daughter
Emily Elder abt 1866  Stepney, Middlesex, England Daughter
Mary A. Elder abt 1834  Waterloo, Surrey, England Wife
Mary A. Elder abt 1861  Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England Daughter
Walter M. Elder abt 1868  Bow, Middlesex, England Son
William Elder abt 1839  Lambeth, Surrey, England Head
Wm.G. Elder abt 1863  Waterloo, Surrey, England Son

William is a Builder.

Hi Carol,

Been looking for a census entry for the family in 61 71 81 but without much luck  :(

The Elgram name does exist though as found some - not yours too young - in 1881 born St George in the East and living there.  Quite a few on free BMD all seemingly based in St George in the East.

Will keep looking ... hopefully someone else will too  ;)

Carol, the same family (as PIGRAM) are also at the same address in 1861 but no sign of any Mary Ann E .............  ???

Could your name read PEGRAM/PIGRAM rather than ELGRAM?  I am just wondering iwhether we should all now be looking for this name or stick with ELGRAM?

Hello,

Bit of a saga this one  ;D

Here is 1901 just for the record ...

25 Tarling Street, St George in the East (where I was born!)

William Elgram abt 1863  St George in the East, London, England Visitor
Catherine French abt 1890  Whitechapel, London, England Daughter
Jane Eliz French abt 1886  Whitechapel, London, England Daughter
Joseph J French abt 1859  Whitechapel, London, England Head
Margaret French abt 1899  Whitechapel, London, England Daughter
Mary Ann French abt 1861  Whitechapel, London, England Wife

RG13/312
Folio:    112
Page:    28

William is definitely an Elgram on the page  ??? and is a Dock Carman and is married. Joseph is a Dock Carman too.

A possibility for 1871?  On the page which is a bit scratchy looks like it might be Engram or Engam  :-\

1871

5 Monmouth Street, Shadwell

Martha Engram 1841  Greenwich, Kent, England Head
Mary Engram 1859  Greenwich, Kent, England Daughter
Samuel Engram 1868  St George in the East, Middlesex, England Son
William Engram 1861  St George in the East, Middlesex, England Son
Francis Engram 1854  Greenwich, Kent, England Son

Difficult to tell if Martha is Married or a Widow  ???

RG10/544
Folio:    80
Page:    20

All very confusing ...
