Joseph Lee

Hi, my husbands grandfather is Joseph Lee, born about 1887 in Birkenhead. He married Annie Davies on 6/6/1909 at St Lukes Church in the parish of Tranmere. On the marriage cert his occupation is labourer. On the 1911 cenus it is stated that he is a shipyard worker, so I want to know how I can find out if he worked at Cammell Lairds or just in the docks around there. Also i my husband thinks he joined up in WW1, but i can not find anything about that, but if he worked in the shipyard, then wouldnt he have a reserve occupation? So can anyone help please. Sheila

Sheila - my understanding is that reserved occupation was more of a WW2 concept - in WW1 it was more that an employer would request someone be exempt from serving.

The father's occupation should be on the birth certificate of his children so if any were born during 1914-1918 that could show service.

Many service records from WW1 were lost in a fire during WW2 - those that survive are on Ancestry. There are "medal cards" for most people who served but with a common name, unless you know his unit you've probably got several possibles.

1885 - 1890 I checked for any Joseph Lee born Birkenhead ...no results ..but
there is a Joseph Lee registered Tranmere in 1887

On the bt of  Joseph Lee on 20 aug 1887 his parents James, a stoker & Mary Ellen, of 19, Helmingham Road and also gives dob 31st July 1887
