You may have seen the PROV digitised will for George MATTHEWS, retired public servant, of Beechworth, died 17 May 1895.
The papers state that his place of residence was Clifton Apiary, Melbourne Rd, Beechworth and formerly of Williamstown.  The will is dated June 1886 when he lived in Williamstown and he states his occupation to be'carriage inspector'.

He leaves his house in Yarra St Williamstown to his wife Margaret Matthews for her lifetime and then it is for his daughters Mary Elizabeth Matthews, Hepzibah Ellen Matthews, Margaret Hannah Matthews 'as long as they shall remain unmarried or shall live'.  The house is then to be sold and everything divided equally among his children.  The farm in Beechworth is to go to daughters Hepzibah and Margaret, and the piano (after his wife's death) to Mary.

Thank you leonie19 and judith for your information I am still not sure what happened to the child elizabeth matthews who was left at the ballarat benevolment assylum by mary matthews in 1862 when she picked up her other 2 children Annie and Rebecca  it stated that elizabeth had been taken and employed by a Mr and Mrs Reid which according to searches many people would come to the assylum and take children for their housekeepers. and many years of searching showed nothing so i thought she may have been taken in by Mary and John Matthews when her mother died. Only other item i found was a Miss E Matthews on board the ship HOLMSDALE which left Melbourne March 1867 and also on board a Mr and Mrs Reid ship was bound for London. So i have  perhaps given up a bit at searching as over the past few years nothing has emerged. Thank you

Thank you Judith for the information about George E. Matthews's will.  It's great being able to download wills like this at no cost.  From what you've written Lynne, it seems that you are looking for people in a different Matthews family.  The Mary Matthews you mention who had children at the Ballarat Assylum may have been married - though not necessarily.  The Mary Elizabeth Matthews in my family did not marry and I believe that she had no children.  I shall send for her death certificate for further details.
Cheers
Leonie

Sorry leonie you have misread my message The mary Matthews that left Elizabeth at the Ballarat Assylum was married to john Matthews.   the Elizabeth left behind i thought may have been your Mary Elizabeth who had been taken in by Mary and John at the death of Mary Elizabeths mother   but John and mary may have just called her elizabeth so as not to confuse her with mary the wife of john.I hope that is a better message.

Obviously the last post on here was some 5 years ago, but is anyone who has posted still active.

George E Matthews was my Great-Great-Great Grandfather. I have a photo or two of him and obviously details of my fork of the family if anyone is interested.
