Which portrait is which?

This image is a collection of 4 images. The two on the left are prints of miniature portraits of my ggg-grandmother and her sister. I believe that the two photos on the right are also of the two sisters.

I am having difficulty seeing the resemblance between the portraits and the photos when they are older.

Which portrait is which sister?  Let's number them 1-4, left to right.  Is the pairing 1-3 & 2-4 or 1-4 & 2-3?  All opinions welcome!

I can see a resemblance between the two photographs, so they could easily be sisters.  However, I'm afraid I can't see any similarities between the two paintings and either of the photos  There may have been a measure of artistic licence used in the paintings, meaning it's hard to reconcile them to photos...plus the space of quite a few years between them makes it even more difficult to match them up.

Someone with a better eye than me might be able to see resemblances though.

Glad it's not just me! I suppose those who painted portraits needed to make sure that the image was flattering... their livelihood depended on it!

#4 has a dimple which neither of the young ones has in the paintings.  You'd think a portrait painter would have put that in if it existed.  So no mileage there.

The age difference makes likenesses hard to pick.

I'd say 1=3  and 2=4   based on the nose length to eye width ratio.

I agree that it's too difficult to pair the portaits with the photographs, but if I had to choose, perhaps 1 may pair with 3, but I disagree that 2 is the same woman as 4. The chin is completely different.

Here's another photo of #4 - taken when she's even older - but thinner. On the left is the "original" which I'm told is a reprint, and on the right is a restored version done by a kind soul on this board.

Does this help? If not, we'll just chalk it up to a portrait artist who took a lot of liberties to make them look as attractive as possible!

I'd say 1 and 3 and definitely 2 and 4. There is something about the expression. The 3 photo is lacking in expression so it is more difficult to see but the artist captures something in the 2 portrait and the 4 photographer has to my mind caught it also.

I'd say the first portrait is (probably) the same lady as no 3 photo ... the eyebrows are strong in both.   The 2nd and 4th .... who knows !


But how lovely to have miniatures of ancestors !    Envy ... envy !
