Thomas Gore born 1918 in Hindley Completed
« on: Sunday 11 March 12 12:45 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please direct me to a site where I can find Thomas Gore's army records. I believe he was a private in WW2 and served in Egypt in 1944. He may be shown as being in a Yorkshire regiment because he got married in Yorkshire in 1939. I have tried the National Archives site but find it virtually impossible to navigate. Thank you.

WW2 records are not yet public. To obtain service records you need to be the person or if they have died, their next of kin. Details of how to do this:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html

There is a limited amount online for some PoWs. You may find any gallantry medals listed in the London Gazette (free access online). If the marriage or birth of any children was during his service you may find his rank, regiment & serial number given on the relevant certificate.

mshrmh, Thank you very much for your reply. I do not really want all his service records, I just want enough information to try and confirm that he is who I think he is. Information like which town he came from and maybe his DOB.
Thank you :)

You say he got married in Yorkshire in 1939 but marriage index has no Thomas Gore marrying in 1939 - only 3 marriages in Yorkshire for 1939 are a Harold, a Noel A P and a Vincent!!!

Annette - the marriage is on FreeBMD in the Don Valley reg. district.

Fisherman - do you know if he has died,as we're not supposed to put living people's info on here? You'd need to get certificates for the details you want. I'm guessing that WW2 records won't be made available for some time while there are still plenty of people alive who served - perhaps the 100 year rule thing may apply?

Annette7, I found the marriage on YorkshireBMD Marriage Index 1939

mshrmh, Yes he is dead, and his wife too. Thomas Gore died in 1978 in St Helens, Lancs and his wife died in 2005 in Wigan/Leigh, Lancs.
Afraid I won't be here to see the records if the 100 year rule applies.  ;D
Thank you both very much for your replies.

fisherman - there are several births 1939-1950 on FreeBMD with the surname combination of the 1939 marriage - if he was serving at the time of registration his service details (regiment, rank & number I think) should be on the certificate - the 1943 one is perhaps the most likely. If you get that you might be able to find more general information as to where his unit went when etc - some regiments have histories and timelines online or via their museums etc.
