Manchester archives
« on: Sunday 11 March 12 06:10 GMT (UK) »
I will be in Manchester in early June and need to know where the archives are kept nowadays. Has the work at the Library finished? Are the archives back? If not where are the records, are they accessible and are there any difficulties researching?

The Library is due to re-open 2014 according to this link, which also links through to the GMCRO and Manchester Room at the City Library for current arrangements - I think the main thing for the Library is more limited space so booking advisable.

Hi,
I was in there on Friday. The records are at the library on Deansgate - easy to get to and very helpful staff around. Photocopies 50 pence each, so take a stack of coins for the machine.

Hi Paul

The others are spot on when they advise you that the Manchester Local Studies Library is located at City Library.  The Local Studies section is on the top floor. The information that they hold is here:

 http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/1062/archive_collections/4670/our_collections

There are computers you can use on a first come first serve basis. Access to FindMyPast & Ancestry are free and there is also access to the Burials online which is also free.  The Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society offer a Help Desk on a Thursday from 11-2pm.  To use the microfilm readers you must book a place.  Some days they are quite busy other days not very busy.

The Manchester Archives is located on Marshall Street.  But the information you most probably would like to view would be the parish registers, rate books, electoral rolls etc.  which are on microfilm located at City Library.
