Shelton
« on: Saturday 10 March 12 17:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I have a Jane Shelton who had a baby in 1819, also  Jane Shelton (no father) in Tottenham.
I can't find where Jane senior came from. Also, when young Jane married,  still in Tottenham,  her father is given as Robert Crouch. There are two possible Robert Crouchs in that place at that time.  if anyone can untangle them or help with Jane snr. I'd be really grateful.

Not helping but
The christening in 1819 gives the following information
Born 28th January 1819
Christened 28th Feb 1819
Jane dtr of Robert and Jane Shelton resident Tottenham, no fathers occupation.

At least that confirms her father's first name was Robert though probably wasn't present at the christening, hence he was crossed off.

Could you please give us the information you have on these two so we know who you are talking about

There's a "CW" written in the margin next to Jane Jnr's baptism.   Anyone know what it means?

Hi

The information about the father comes from her marriage in Hornsey.

17th September 1838 St Mary Hornsey
William Ward Full Age Bachelor Bricklayer Wood Green Henry Ward Bricklayer
Jane Shelton Minor Spinster Tottenham Robert Crouch Porter
Both signed
Witnesses Richard Ginn and Harriet Pardoe

The issue with tracking Robert Crouch is he may not have been from Tottenham. Young girls usually worked as servants away from home, so Jane Shelton senior could have got pregnant while working away from the Tottenham area. The Robert Lucas Crouch with wife Rebecca in Hornsey was a gardener.

Possibly baptism for Jane Shelton senior

1st January 1792 All Hallows Tottenham
Jane Shelton parents Richard and Jane, father's occupation labourer

Richard and Jane had 8 children baptised at All Hallows between 1784-1802.

Regards

Valda

 - maybe a complete red herring, but here is a Robert Crouch who was a porter in 1810.

"Swan and Two Necks" was a famous coaching inn in London: "Lad Lane" no longer exists but it was in the City of London in the area now Gresham Street.

Where is stanmapstone when you need him  ;D   ;D

The best I could come up with was Church Warden and I am not sure that would make sense  ::)

I thought it could be that too - the only other ones I got was "Civil War"  ;D  :-[

but whoever baptised Jane baptised others as well as there is no "CW"  next to them

A late thanks, I'm sorry
It could be Church Warden as I've got him as a possible Beadle and also gardener to the church, which means a connection with it.  Presumably the Church would keep a record?
