Hi Breenbryne,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, Christopher Julian recommended John for the RIC.
Although Duagh is the other side of Listowel, it's only 10 miles away, and I think perhaps they may have met in Listowel in some way or another.
The family seemed to get around a bit:
The marriage of John Guerin and Ellen Quill was in Lixnaw, about 15 or so miles from Duagh, and if Ellen is the daughter of the John Quill of Kilshenane in the 1825 Applotment books, she grew up ten or so miles away.
The family also seem to have had connections up a little north, nearer to Tullamore House in Moyvane - about 6 and a half miles from Tullamore and over 8 miles from Duagh.
A John and Ellen are sponsors at a baptism there in 1837 and they may be the same couple.
I can't conclusively tie my John with the John born there in 1825, but he seems the most reasonable fit so far - same parent's first names, right time of birth, right county, right father's occupation and within 10 miles of the JP who recommended him for the RIC.
I hope that perhaps the Quill family might give me some clue that can clinch the connection for me.
Do you know whether the Quills were based anywhere else or moved from the area later?
My Guerins disappear between the Tithe Applotments and Griffiths, and I wonder whether they emigrated, or perhaps John was simply no longer a tenant farmer and laboured for someone else.
