General Quarter Session List
« on: Saturday 10 March 12 19:17 GMT (UK) »
I have discovered on Ancestry a list of General Quarter Sessions held at the Guildhall in Norwich.  This gives a list of people who have appeared there, their crime and sentence.

I think that an ancestor of mine might be mentioned, how do I go about finding out more details of what he did and if it really was him.

His name is Frederick Armes and he was imprisoned for 9 months on 20 March 1872 for receiving stolen goods.

I would be grateful for any help anyone can give me on a. confirming it is him and b. finding out what exactly he was charged with as receiving.

Can you just turn up to look at the records, do you know?  I'm going to Norwich on Wednesday and  could  call in for you but can't see from the website the availability of records (or, indeed, anything about the records at all).

Thanks for replying to my query.  I am not sure if you can just ask to look at the records.
They are on Ancestry in the part that is headed England and Wales Criminal Registers 1791-1892.

Frederick Armes is on page 280 of the Norwich  General Quarter Sessions held at Guildhall,Norwich on 20 March 1872. He is at no 7 and 8 charged with receiving stolen goods.
I live near Edinburgh so have never visited the Norwich Record Office.

I would be very grateful if you could find out any additional information, even if it is just his address as I know he was living at Church St, Catton, Norwich at the time, that would confirm that it was him and also answer a few other queries I have about him.

Sorry, I misunderstood.  I thought you meant the records were held at the Guildhall but I think you meant that the Quarter Sessions were held there  :-[ I guess the records are at Norwich Record Office - I will check this out and let you know what I can do.  I don't go there very often but the next time I do I will take a look for you (unless someone beats me to it  ;D)
