Edmond Graham B1791 Brampton
« on: Saturday 10 March 12 08:53 GMT (UK) »
I'm researching the Grahams from Brampton. This is what we have so far:-

The 1841 Census
Edmond Graham (age 50) and his wife Sarah (45) are living at the Moat Houses in Brampton, Cumberland (now Cumbria), together with 7 children. James, Thomas and Mary are triplets aged 20 (a miracle of survival in 1821), Margaret (15), Edmond (14), William (11) and Frances, a very late arrival aged 1 (mum was 44). We would like to know about his occupation and previous generations.
The 1851 Census
Young Edmond is now 24 working as a watchmaker in Blackfriars Street, Carlisle and married to Frances (26) who was born in Kesket, Cumberland (known now as Hesket – which is the place we kennel the dog). Carlisle is about 8 miles from Brampton where he was born and they have children Margaret (3, who was born in Scotland  - Gretna is only 10 miles up the road) and John (10 months old born in Aspatria about 40 miles from Carlisle- he was not to survive as you don't find him on the 1861 Census).
The 1861 Census
Edmond has now moved to 128 Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland  about 80 miles distant, he's packed in watchmaking and is now a carter – moving stuff about with a horse and cart. In 1861 he now has 5 children:- Margaret (13), Alfred E.(8), John W. (6) (He replaced the earlier John who'd have been 10), Elizabeth (5) and Thomas (3). On Census night they were also accommodating a visitor George Haugh who was 25, married and a “Eating House Keeper” born in Cumberland.
Again there'd been a fair bit of moving around 1851-61. Alfred E was born in Cockermouth or Keswick, John W. in Newcastle, Elizabeth and Thomas in Bishop Auckland.
My wife is a descendant of Alfred E.

We're trying to find out what occupation Edmond had in Brampton, and who his prior generations were. Also if we can make a link with George Graham the famous chronometer inventor who came from Brampton and is buried in Westminster Abbey. Note the younger Edmond was watchmaking in Carlisle so there is a possible tenuous connection.

Any help welcome. By chance we moved to Cumbria 10 years ago from Manchester and have just found the local family connections...

Hi
Your triplets are not a miracle - at least I don't think they are.  In the 1841 census ages above 15 had to be rounded down to the nearest 5 so those aged 20 -24 will show as 20.    45-49 will show as 45 etc.    You should be able to confirm this by ages in later census records.
Have you been to the record office to look at the church registers to see if you can find baptisms for the children?  Occupations are often shown in those.
Andrea

George Graham, the famous watch maker actually hailed from Kirklinton, if that's any help.

Welcome to rootschat Keith-Clan,

Looks to me that in 1841 Census Edmond is a Weaver.

EDMOND/SARAH Christened at Brampton, Cumberland;
JAMES 25 August 1816 (Record as Hayton by Brampton)
WILLIAM 08 January 1830

And at Lanercost, Cumberland;
MARY 12 August 1821
THOMAS 12 August 1821
MARGARET 18 March 1823
JOHN 14 October 1827
EDMUND 14 October 1827
(Source Familysearch.Org)

Just because they we Christened same day it does not mean they were born the same year, it was cheaper to do a mass Christening as far as I know.

And FRANCES Graham Christened 17 June 1840, Brampton, Cumberland was the Illeg Daug of MARY Graham.

Now George, the Eating House Keeper seems to be Marys Husband. Was he enumerated twice in the 1861 Census? It does happen.
Also he is age 34, not 25 on the 1861 Census where he is staying with Edmond/Fanny.

By 1861 they are in Northumberland.

1861 Census
23 Clayton St,
Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland
RG9/3819/65/5
George HAUGH, 38, Head, Mar, Eating House Keeper, born Apperley
Mary Haugh, 39, Wife, Mar, born Longford
Frances Haugh, 21, Daug, Unm, born Brampton
Thomas GRAHAM, 38, Brother, Widr, Woolen Weaver, born Hayton
Edmud Graham, 69, Father in Law, Widr, Woolen Weaver, born Cumberland
Wm John Graham, 6, Nephew, born Cumberland
+ 2 Lodgers and 2 Servants

Trish1120, Clearly and Sillgen thanks very much for your contributions in revealing the Graham family history. Whilst by chance we live only 25 miles from where this history took place, the most excited descendant is a Chicago policeman Mike Reischl (his grandmother was a Graham) who awaits with trepidation every updating e-mail I send.
Our next steps will be via Brampton Local History Society and Carlisle Records Office, fortunately not far away,
Thanks again, John Keith
