You mentioned his First World War service ... do you have medals from that period, or anything else with his service number ?

Mum told me about the stories that he told about the war and she does believe that he did have medals from the first war... but she does not know who got them.  One one of the stories was that he was wounded in the leg in WW1 and apparently patched up and sent back out to fight.  When he was finally repatriated back to Australia he supposedly still had a lump of shrapnel still in his calf.
