William Charles Race
« on: Thursday 08 March 12 17:01 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon everyone,

Almost completed my family tree.... but my great uncle William Charles Race refuses to reveal if he married or when and where he died.

He was born in Limehouse Stepney 14/02/1866. His father was William Race b1820 - d 1879 at 34 Giffen St Deptford.

1871 Census shows him with his siblings Thomas and Alice at the Mile End Industrial School

1881 Census shows him with mother Hannah and bother Thomas at 10 Berthon Terrace Deptford. Also his
sister Alice she has now married and sis shown as Alice Rogerson.

1891 Census shows him with mother Hannah and bother Thomas at 21 Regent St Deptford.

1895 mother Hannah dies in the Union Infirmary address on death cert 99 Creek Road Deptford.

Thereafter, my great uncle William vanishes.

Electoral registers in 1892,3,4 & 5 show a William Race at 20 Randle Place Roan St Greenwich.

However, I cannot be sure that this is him.

No record of him marrying or his death. His occupation was usually a labourer and it is likely that he did not use his middle name of Charles.

Any help with either information of guidance would be most gratefully received.

Thank you for reading this.

God bless

Thomas Race

Can't see anything obvious at the moment.

Do you have a death entry for his brother Thomas?

Death of William's brother Thomas was 3rd August 1938 in the Miller Hospital Greenwich.

Thanks for your interest..... it's a real brain teaser.

Electoral registers in 1892,3,4 & 5 show a William Race at 20 Randle Place Roan St Greenwich.

The 1891 census for this address gives a William Race age 32 bn Durham, so not your William

Thank you Rosie for your information re 20 Randle Place. I will now remove that address.  I have come up with another Electoral address for William Race: 1892 Globe Buildings in Rotherhithe. Also, 1895 William Race was registered at 198 Jamaica Road Rotherhite and in 1901 196 Jamaica Road. in 1915 he is at 258 Lower Road Rotherhithe. Can you help with these addresses?

Also, Williams mother Hanna, on her death cert lists address as 99 Creek Road, Deptford. Could William or Thomas be living here with her?

Your time and help is much appreciated by my family. We have not given up, but are at a loss as to how to proceed.

Many thanks

Thomas Race

Hi Thomas

The electoral registers pre-1918 may not help if he wasn't eligible to vote.

Hi

Could be off on a tangent here but is this a possible:

The 1901 census seems to show William as a visitor, working as a 'builder general labourer'. Other people in the census are a Cecilia Kenneth (58), Eliza Kenneth (19) and Charles Kenneth (15). It is showing he is still single, but that he was born in London, Westminster.

Is this him? Or a different William?

Otherwise the next time a William Race seems to appear is in the early electoral registers of the 1920's, however, the name appears alone.

There is also a William Race living at 43 Aston Road, Bromley who died 12 March 1941. Could this be your William? Informant was an Emily Akroyd.

Can't find a marriage, so possible he never married?

Cheers
