  thanks cath it looks as if you've hit the nail on the head with this info Kate was my dads mum so if Kate was my gran then h. elphick was my dads grandad not his uncle as i was led to believe!! sorry  I've got it wrong i see it now h. elphick is h.eliphick son so dad was right it was his uncle my fault
