I can't find them in 1841! :(

But the 1841 census doesn't include place of birth - just whether born in county or not!
And i think the the surname has been mistranscribed?

FindMyPast shows a 6 year old Thomas Earp in the Chotlton district - which covers Rusholme, but I don't have access to that any more.
There are 3 Earps in the Cholton district, but no sign of a father?
Elizabeth  45
Harriet  8
Thomas  6

In 1841, Elizabeth, born c1796, was a house keeper, living in Frog Lane, Didsbury, although it gives the birth place as Lancashire.

There is a death for Harriet in 1843

I notice that some of the children have a middle name of Elton and there is an Elizabeth Elton who was born in Appleby in 1794. It sounds as though she could be Thomas's mother but I can't find a marriage.

There are no details of Thomas's marriage on Lancashre OPC and so it sounds as though the only way to confirm the father would be through the marriage certificate - Q4 1862 in Manchester - or perhaps a message on the Lancashire board.

Regards,
David

Just a thought.

The only Thomas and Harriett Earp that I can find with a mother called Elizabeth were baptised on the same day, 29th March 1837, in Cubley, Derbyshire. Their father was Thomas Earp, who was buried in Cubley on 29th March 1837, age 43.

There was a third child, Joseph, and there is a burial at St James, Didsbury, on 3rd January 1841 - i.e. he would have just missed the census.

Harriett Earp was buried at the same church on 19th February 1843.

There is no other Earp family in the Didsbury area in 1841.

Note that they are transcribed as Eriss on the Ancestry index.

Regards,
David

P.S. There was a marriage between Thomas Earp and Elizabeth Elton in 1829 but in Coventry.

Eliabeth's death certificate and the son Thomas's marriage certificate list the father as Thomas Earp - 'farmer.' Is this confirmed on any of the information about the Derbyshire 'Eriss' family?  ???

Also, Thomas b.1835 died 16.06.1892 BMD Vol 8c Page 492

The Thomas Earp burial in Cubley is on this link but no occupation - http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DERBYSGEN/2008-01/1199970444

A summary of the baptisms can be found on http://www.ronnieearp.co.uk/html/body_igirest_of_derbyshire.html
A lookup on the Derbyshire forum might help with the father's occupation.

There is a probate record for Thomas Earp who died in Manchester on 9th June 1892 but he was a different person, born in Fleckney, Leics. c1818. His age on the burial record at Ardwick cemetery, on 20th June 1892, is given as 59, which is 20 years out compared with the census records. On the BMD index, he is probably the person in Prestwich district

It seems as though there were two Thomas Earps who died within a few days of each other and both were buried in Ardwick cemetery. However, only one appears in the typed index and only one in the hand-written register. It sounds as though one was omitted in each case, presumed to be a duplication.

In the index, Thomas Earp, who died on 16 June 1892, age 58, is preceded by Elizabeth Earp, age 79, who died on 18th August 1873, and was buried on 21st August. In the register, her address is given as Coberg Street, the same as the 1871 census.

There is also a probate record for Thomas Earp, son of Thomas and Annie, who died on 18th December 1923 at 13 Rosebery Street, Moss Side. Administration to Ethel Earp (nee Scholes), widow.
