Hi Adrian

The Medal Card reg 9318 was the only one I picked up on, but discounted it because I did not understand the jargon on it, but now that you have explained it, I think it could be him.

Hi Topas

Having gone over all the post on this, the only other conclusion that I can come to on this, is that Matthew William Hedges was adopted when he was born, and registered in that name, in later life he found out who his birth parents were, and then changed his name to Alfred May, and then used all of his names through out the rest of his life,I think  that the clue to this may be in the Civil Service Evidence of Age record.

After speaking to a cousin on the IOW grandad was definatly born in London within the sound of Bow Bells which makes Poplar as a birth place likely, he always remembers being told that Grandad deserted from one regiment and joined another, even pre war surely they would have traced him, and to join either regiment he surely must have had birth certificate or something, so how would he have had documents in two names or did they not check things like that then
