Hi Gaille,

You say you're renewing, so I assume you've subscribed to both Ancestry and FindMyPast in the past?

I would never say one of them is better than the other - both have their benefits. It all depends on which databases will be most useful to you. Both have access to all censuses (most counties in 1911 are now transcribed on Ancestry, and those not transcribed can usually be found without much difficulty). So before deciding I would take a good look at what databases each site has to offer, and make your decision based on that.

You may even be able to get a 14 day trial on either site if you register with a new email address. Also, many libraries subscribe to Ancestry (FindMyPast does not usually offer this) which could be sufficient for your purposes.

I agree with Freckneale,

The best one for you, will be the one that offers the Databases you need most to thoroughly  re-search your family.

They both have a lot to offer :)

Hi,  Gaille, I agree with the previous replies that you need to look at what each offers.  I note that you have quite a list of Cheshire research interests.  If you do not have copies of the entries in Parish Registers then you will find the 'Cheshire Collection' which is only on  FindMyPast very useful because you will be able to print off the images.  You might consider taking out a 6 month subscription to FindMyPast and then transfering to Ancestry when you have exhausted the Cheshire information.

There was a similar topic a couple of years ago ( http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442742.10.html ) and here's what I said then :-

I switched from Ancestry to FindMyPast a couple of months ago and have no regrets. They each have their good and bad points which have been highlighted already in this thread. However, what does it for me are the superb transcriptions from FindMyPast. What I particularly like is that the transcription is for a complete household rather than an individual. Also, it gives the address and occupations which an Ancestry transcription doesn't. Best of all is that it usually fits on one screen which makes it easy to do a screen capture or print-out. I have found the odd error in FindMyPast transcriptions just like I did on Ancestry. Once reported FindMyPast make the correction in a matter of days (sometimes within 24 hours) whereas Ancestry can take several weeks to act on a transcription error report.

Ancestry may have improved since then so people who use it might like to comment on the points I made at that time. One major change to FindMyPast last November was the addition of the Cheshire archives, a collection of 10 million records spanning the period 1538-1910. This has proved invaluable for my personal research and so my vote would always go to FindMyPast.
