Hi Les,
Well we went up to Carey Street on Wednesday of this week and were told after much walking around that a small room at the end of a passageway (Court) which led through to No.7 Lincolns Inn, was the workshop many years before of a Watchmaker repairer.  The room was initially one of a few off of the passage and led out to Carey Street and was next door to a pub called Seven Stars.
The proprietor bought the room several years ago and used it after a bit of refurbishing as a smallish dining room for the pub.  She told us the story re the Watchmaker.

We also found a silversmiths in Carey Street who was most unhelpful and denied any knowledge of any other silversmith in the nearby locality.   Then we walked further down Carey St to find that a considerable amount of the area around Serle St has been demolished for future building works.  When we arrived home I wrote to Lincolns Inn to ask if they had anything on the History of the area and a very kind person replied with the info of where Cooks Court used to be, and can you believe it was right where they are doing the future building works.  Unfortunately we were just 1 year too late to see the actually shop Moss worked from.  Did your brother take any photos when he went to see the shop?

Hello all,

Based here in Australia.

Looks like I am another descendant of Moss Levin.  My maternal grandmother's (Edith Jenny Massey (nee Levin born 1913-2006) father was Francis Percival Levin (1874-1938) whose father was Alexandra Levin whose father was Moss Levin (therefore my great, great grandfather).

I don't have any light to shed on Moss Levin apart from putting my hand up as another descendant/relative of some folks here for Moss Levin.

For interest I am arranging for my mother to undertake a DNA test through Family Tree DNA to see what comes up and possibly identify other unknown relatives who have taken DNA tests.

Feel free to contact me if interested.

Cheers!
Rob.

Hi all,

I have received a lovely reply from LES about our ancestor Moss Levin and the great difficulties it has been to establish his origins prior to coming to London in around 1780.

I would love to reply to LES personally but being a new member I have restrictions on replying to personal messages but I know LES will be reading this from this topic anyway.

I am quite surprised that Moss died around 1842 as an "inmate" in a pauper/workhouse even though having many children.  From what I have also identified Moss's last wife Ann died as an "inmate" in a similar situation around 1865/8 (don't have my chart with me at the moment).

Maybe our ideals of looking after our elderly are different in this day and age but I am surprised that none of Moss's or Anne's children took on a caring role.

Can anyone shed light on this observation query.

As stated earlier I am getting my mother to do a dna test of which part of the test will also hopefully give some information on the possible geographic area the Levin's come from.  Although the test only gives some general info in this regards it may prove useful.  Still awaiting for the test to arrive and once Family Tree DNA receives the test if takes a good 6-8 weeks for processing.  So, hopefully in less than 3 months I will have interesting info I am happy to share.

Cheers!
Rob.
