Moss Levin - Marcus Moses Levin
« on: Tuesday 06 March 12 19:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me find some information on one of my ancestors.  His name was Moss Levin or Marcus Moses Levin.

He had 3 wives 1 - Dorothy Cubly, 10-9-1787 Holborn
2 - Mary Wilson, 1796 St Lukes, Chelsea
3 - Ann Larkin, 1821 Wandesworth

He also had many children.  I can't find any information on him from before his first marriage.

Can anyone help?
xx

Hi and welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Nothing to add on his early life but an amendment to your info.

He married for the 2nd time at St Georges Hanover Sq, Mary was of St Lukes Parish at the time.

There are a couple of references to him and his family in trees online at Ancestry but no-one has turned up a birth or baptism yet.

Thanks for that, I rushed it a little.  It's really difficult trying to find anything.  Any help is very much appreciated.

Welcome :)

I'm no expert on Jewish records, but that is where I would be looking for the origins of a Moss Levin (notwithstanding his several Church of England marriages).

www.jewishgen.org may be of use.  There are also a number of threads on Rootschat about finding synagogue records.

Moss' burial record of March 1842 gives an age of 74, suggesting a birthdate about 1768. The City of London synagogues may be a good starting point, if records survive.

Good evening from a lovely Oxfordshire..Moss Levin 1768 to 1842 was my 2X great grandfather..His daughter Kate (Kitty) mrd my Great Grandfather William Montague Glenister who became chief constable of Hastings Sussex..  Moss Levin was a silversmith and had a shop in a road off The Strand in London.. My brother has been to see the shop and it's still a silversmith's..We have been trying for years to locate more details on him..Bruv has contacted Richmond Surrey Synagogue but their records don't go back that far as earlier records were lost in a fire..We are led to believe his family arrived in London docks about 1780/83 from Hamburg Germany..This is where a lot of Russian/Polish Jewish immigrants departed from to USA as well as UK...If only we could find the passenger arrivals for that period we may find where he was actually born....Keep looking..I'm 85 now so only 15 years before my 100 not out to find him in...Can I make it???   Regards...LES.
