David McCullam & 99th Regiment of Foot
« on: Tuesday 06 March 12 10:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everybody

My GGG Grandfather was David McCullam.  (I understand his father was also David).  His death certificate mentions he was born in Glasgow about 1820.  Research here in Western Australia suggests he joined the 99th Regiment of Foot at 14 years of age.  He married Ann (Nancy) Wilson at Elland, Halifax, Yorkshire in 1842.  They had several children.  It appears the two eldest children may have been born in the UK.
Elizabeth c.1845 born UK?
Martha c.1850 born UK?
Selina 1851 born Bunbury, Western Australia - Confirmed by Western Australia birth cert (David as father is recorded as a "Soldier of the 99th Regiment")
Ellen c.1854 born Yorkshire - recorded on Western Australia death cert (Yorkshire not confirmed by any other source and not able to locate West Aust birth cert.
Jane c.1857 born ?
Walter 1859 born Perth, Western Australia
Arthur  1863 born Perth, Western Australia
Esther 1866 born Perth, Western Australia

It is believed David came to Australia as a guard on a convict transport ship accompanied by his family.

At some time it appears David McCullam transferred from the 99th Regiment of Foot to the 12th Regiment of Foot.  The family remained in Western Australia with David recorded as a soldier of the 12th Regiment, later a policeman and died at Albany in 1901.

You can see the research available to me over here suggests the first two children Elizabeth & Martha were born in the UK, the third Selina in Western Australia, the fourth Ellen in Yorkshire, Jane ?, with the remaining three Walter, Arthur & Esther being born in Perth, Western Australia.  I am desperately trying to identify where and when Ellen was really born (as she is my line).  It seems strange 2 born in the UK, 1 in W. Aust followed by 1 in Yorkshire and the last 3 in W. Aust.  I guess there is a chance David & his family returned to the UK with his Regiment and later was posted back to Australia with the British Army.

The three main matters I am trying to ascertain in order of importance are:

Ellen McCullam's correct birth date and place (this is my line)
David McCullam's correct birth date
Ann (Nancy) Wilson's correct birth date

Is any good person out the able to throw any light on the matters for me.

Hello, My name is Darren Reilly, I am related to Esther McCullam born in Albany Western Australia. Esther married John Reilly in Albany. I know this is not directly related to your post but I want to let you know about Esther McCullam who is my Great Aunt. Esther we think married John Reilly and he was her sister in law. My great Grandmother was Bridget Reilly who married different John Reilly who we think is her sister in law also. The 2 married couples named there children with similar names for example Esther & John had  sons William Davitt Reilly & Edward John Reilly. The other married couple Bridget & John Reilly had sons Michael Davitt Reilly & Edward John Reilly. This coincidence particular middle name Davitt gives us a clue that the 2 couples were closely related. The sad thing is on the Reilly side of the family is that we are not able to prove this. I would love to know more about the McCullam family but the Albany family are reluctant to contact me as they think I am not related. Anyway I thought I would post this comment to let you know about Esther McCullam.

Hi, I found 2 births which may be of your David & Ann.

Births:
Maria   qtr: March 1843   Yorkshire   under name: Cullam

Ann   qtr: December 1844   Yorkshire   under name: McCallum

As to the missing girls, this is a long shot but is there any way your David may have been stationed in the Berkshire/Oxfordshire area when he returned to England with his family??? The only matches I could make for the three girls is in this area under the name Allum: Martha Ann  qtr: June 1850, Ellen  qtr:Sept 1853, & Ann Elizabeth  qtr: June 1845. As to Jane, I wonder if she may have another forename before Jane or could she be under the name Jean which is sometimes interchanged for Jane? I looked on the FreeBMD and also Englands births with no success. Good Luck, Kim

Hello, My last post was a bit confusing, 1) Esther McCullam married brother in law John Reilly.
2) Bridget Reilly married brother in law John McCullum? Reilly. Please note there are 2 John's. It feels weird writing this post but that is what families did in those days. I am surprised that they did this because I know the McCullam family were pioneers of Western Australia and knew plenty of people to socialize with. I hope one day I would be able to prove the couples are linked but the only way to know is if there is a relative on the McCullam side who is in his/her 80's or 90's who knows lots about the family history. On the Reilly side there isn't anyone who is elderly so the mystery of the family could be kept unproven. Also I am looking for a James Reilly born in 1884 York, Western Australia. The Reilly family think his family are living in South Australia. The rest of the family live in Western Australia. The family are from an Irish/Spanish decent
