*COMPLETED* THANK YOU! Help finding Mum's grave - Gorof
« on: Monday 05 March 12 11:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm new here so sorry if I'm putting this in the wrong place. My mum died in 1987 when I was 12 and was buried in Gorof Public Cemetery, and I was promptly relocated to Birmingham to live with my father. Family friends used to go to the cemetery to put flowers on the grave but no one could find it as she had no headstone. I would love to visit her grave and get a memorial of some sort put there, so can anyone give me any advice on how I find her?
She died on January 31st 1987 aged 40, and was buried on February 4th. Her name was Beryl Joanne Parkhouse.
I really have no idea where to go or where to start so any help will be very gratefully received.
Many thanks  :)

Hello Cupcake and welcome to Rootschat.  Do you know where Gorof Public Cemetery is?  The only one I know of  is in Ystradgynlais,  Powys about 30 miles from where I live.  If it is this one, I'll see if I can find who you could contact so that you can find your mother's grave.

Regards,
GS

Hi Greensleeves, thank you. Yes that is the one. We lived in Wind Road in Ystradgynlais until she passed away. I remember you used to have to pass a surgery to get to the cemetery, but as far as I can remember there is no church there so I have had no idea who to ask. Thank you for your help  :)

I have found Gorof Public Cemetery on the map - it is actually a bit out of Ystradgynlais, at Gurnos which is slightly to the south, along the Gurnos Road and then along the Gurnosfa Road.  Here is an aerial photo of the site:

I can't find so far who is responsible for the management of the cemetery; it was originally Ystradgynlais Rural District Council but that no longer exists.

My sister said it might come under Gurnos so it must be the same one. I've just filled up seeing that photo and knowing my mother is there somewhere. Thank you Greensleeves. This might sound daft but just that photo has made me feel closer to her. I'm getting sentimental in my old age!

I see the Ystradgynlais Family History Society do look-ups for burials at Gorof Cemetery.  Here is a link to their site:
http://www.ystradgynlaisfhs.co.uk/sserv.html

Might be worth contacting Powys County Council either on their website :

http://www.powys.gov.uk/index.php?id=1&L=0

or at their Brecon Office which is:  Neuadd Brychioniog, Cambrian Way, Brecon, Powys LD3 0HP

You will see on that website if you put in a search on Ystradgynlais Cemeteries that they give a list of the ones they manage but that does not include Gorof.  I've looked on the Swansea City Council website and can't see that they have responsibility either, but presumably someone is cutting the lawns, keeping it tidy and holding all the records.

I'm so glad that you felt good about seeing that aerial photo; sometimes we have to go on a quest to make things right about things which have happened.  I have no doubt that you will achieve what you have set out to find!  I am so pleased to be able to help in a very small way to get you to where you need to be.

If I find out anything else I'll re-post or send you a personal message.  Hope you'll let me know the results of your seearch - if you do get any positive info and can't get to the site I might be able to visit for you and take a photo as I pass by Ystradgynlais on my way to Swansea quite often.
