James Pickering Hammon and Hannah Clarke
« on: Friday 02 March 12 23:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I am researching the Hammons for my partner and we have not been able to get any further back than James Pickering Hammon.

From his death certificate he was born 1822 Ohio USA. There are no names for his parents only Hammon and Hammon for mother and father.

He travelled sometime prior to 1862 to Queensland Australia where he married Hannah Clark/Clarke 18 September 1862.

Hannah Clark/Clarke was born in Leischester, England in 1843.

In Queensland they had 6 children between 1863 and 1873 and then moved to New Zealand where 2 more children were born.
The children included:
1. Mary Jane Hammon b:1863, d:1887, m:1880 Joseph Haslip in New Zealand
2. Martha Hammon b:1865, d:1927, m:1888 Andrew Martin in New Zealand
3. Florence Hammon b:1867, d:1939, m:?     William Crossley in New Zealand
4. James William Hammon b:1869, d:1952, m:1894 Lucy Amy Bell Smith in New Zealand
5. Rachael Hammon b:1871, d:1959, m:1890 Robert Henderson Kirk in New Zealand
6. Daniel Hammon b:1873, d:?  m:1899 Mary Bell Smith in New Zealand
7. Sussanah Hammon b:1876 (NZ), d:1940, m:1898 Peter Thornton in New Zealand
8. Sarah Jane Hammon b:1881 (NZ), d:1881

It is believed that James Pickering Hammon had a brother who came to New Zealand as well. His name was Peter Hammon and if the stories are correct he was a skipper of a boat the sailed on the Kaipara Harbour. We have no information on him and can not find anything via BDM in New Zealand.

James Pickering Hammon was thought to have been injured the US civil war which began in 1861. We don't know whether he fought on 1 side or was injured as a civilian.

We would appreciate any information on the Hammon family that anyone may have.

Kind regards
John Batcheler and Vikki Hammon

Hi John,
James Pickering Hammon died 1887 age 65, if you order his death printout (about NZ$20) from the NZ online BDM site it should have (hopefully) details on it of his parents including mother's maiden name, as well as a place of birth, spouse details etc. I say hopefully because sometimes the informant didn't know these details.
Regards,
Craig.

Sorry, you have his death certificate. I see there is a will for James in Auckland Archives, which someone up there might go and and have a look at on your behalf.
Craig.

Hi Craig and Janette,

Thank-you for the replies.

We have the copy of the will.

We also knew she was remarried to Antonio Perez. She was apparently known as granny Perry.

Do you have any advice on where we would look to determine whether there was a brother called Peter Hammon as there is nothing that we can find in BDM online.

Kind regards
John Batcheler and Vikki Hammon

Hi I just found this when I was reading in horror of my great grandfather Daniel Hammon and related searches came up.  My name is Rachael Hammon, I am Arthur Hammon's Grand daughter and Brian Hammon was my father.  His brothers: Ronald (deceased) and (*)
My father passed away over two years ago, but my mother may be of some assistance I'm not sure - anyway feel free to make contact if you wish  :)
