Name help please
« on: Friday 02 March 12 13:34 GMT (UK) »
Surname is Huther but can't decide on first name, ancestry have it trascribed as Indian Aries  :-\ which seems doubtful.
Next line is the daughter Mary Amelia Huther
Any help appreciated
Regards
Pat

GenesReunited have his name transcribed as Indianaries (all one word).

Born Ireland, 1823.
Not sure if this fact makes any difference?! ;D

As daughter, Mary Amelia was born in Manchester, June qtr 1848, is there any help from her birth details?

We crossed postings I think
I looked for the birth of Mary Amelia on ancestry but must have missed it, I'll have to order the certificate and maybe that will throw some light on it, I thought it might be India Maria but that's not exactly common either  :)

I tried LancashireBMD, but no parents names on there.
(Incidentally, it's probably 25p cheaper getting from their links!)

Also Lan-OPC, but nothing turned up.
Seeing as the father was from Ireland, it is likely to be a Catholic baptism?
And so it wouldn't turn up on Lan-OPC.

'Indianaries' Huther was a female photographer in 1871.  Surely that's unusual enough to be on a list - somewhere?

Strange this - a Mary Huther, age 57, photographer, born Dublin Ireland appears on the 1881 census, still living in Carlisle with husband Edward.

It is confusing:
My ancestor Edmund Huther was born January 15th 1841 in Dublin, Eire.
His parents were named Edward Frederick Huther and Mary Huther
Edmund opened a photographic studio in Foyle Street, Londonderry when he was about 21 years old and first advertised it in trade directories in 1865
A marriage record relates to an 'Edmond' Huther and states that he married Mary Clarke in Londonderry Roman Catholic Church on the 21st June 1866. It is thought that Mary was born about 1844 in Londonderry
Edmund and Mary had five children who were all born Londonderry. They were James Huther (3 April 1867), Catherine (Kate) Huther (12 July 1869), Edward Frederick Huther (9 June 1872), Edmond Hoye Huther (26 May 1873) and Mary Huther (1876).
Edmund appears to have next advertised his studio in 1878 and by that time he had moved it to the Derry Photographic Studio, 18 Carlisle Road, Londonderry
Edmund died on the 14th January 1877
After Edmund's death, Mary kept the business going for a couple of years in the same studio as she advertised from 1880 to 1882.
She also advertised a studio in Letterkenny, a town across the border in County Donegal in Eire.
However, by 1891 Mary was living with her family in Toxteth Park, Liverpool in England and her eldest son James, then aged 26, was shown as a photographer.
By the time of the 1901 census, Mary Huther, age 57, was living at 16 Brown Street, Glasgow with her son James who was working as a railway porter - obviously having given up his father's and mother's profession

So is this Mary Huther Edmund’s mother?
1861 Scotland Census Glasgow Mary Huther age 37 b Ireland Photographer with daughter Adda age 7
1881 England Census Mary Huther photographer, age 57 Cumberland, England with her husband Edward Huther, taylor
1891 England Census Mary Huther no occupation, age 68, widowed, Cumberland
1896 Mary Huther death Cumberland

As I know this Mary is Edmond’s wife/widow
1891 - Mary Huther age 48 at 11 Penrith Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool with oldest son James (aged 26) shown as a photographer and 3 other children
1901 -Mary Huther age 57, at 16 Brown Street, Glasgow with her sons

Back where we started with Indianaries in 1871 in Cumberland b 1823 in Ireland a photographer with her daughter Mary Amelia Huther also a photographer.
So Indianaries b 1823 and Mary b 1824 both Ireland, both photographers must be sisters surely.
