Thomas BROWN, Can't find his death..please help
« on: Friday 02 March 12 10:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Would I be able to request a death look up please for Thomas Brown. He was born in Liverpool UK act 1827 to John Brown a Mariner born act 1795 and Mary Jane Brown born 1795 and listed as a Furniture broker on the 1851 Census.
Thomas immigrated to Australia (unsure when) and married Annie Gee Potts at Ballarat in Aug 1852.
Thomas was a Station, printer, publisher along with his brother William Maxwell Brown, who died at Liverpool asylum, Sydney Australia in 1886.
Thomas's wife Annie, died at Wellington St Waterloo, Sydney 1881. I have a copy of her probate. They had one son, Arthur Ernest Brown born 1866 at Ballarat West.
I have spend a fair bit of money with NSW BDM and each time it is the wrong Thomas Brown.
I know he attempted suicide Dec 1874 while living at Sebastapol st Ballarat. I have attached The Argus newspaper notice.
I contacted the Geelong Hospital but they said the records for 1874 were lost so the only info I have is the newspaper notice. Thomas went on to Sydney where he continued as a printer and publisher. The last newspaper advertisement is in 1884 in Sydney about selling his business and then I can find no trace of him again. I would be very grateful if I could have some suggestions of where else to look.
Thank you
Michelle

Michelle how did you select which certificates to purchase?

Have you used a transcription agent?

Perhaps he died in an institution and there may be no identifying information anyway.

Sorry to sound negative but Thomas BROWN with parents John and Mary certainly doesn't make for easy research.

This one is would probably make things too easy :)

Hi Cando,

Thanks for your reply.
The common name makes it very hard. I tried to narrow down Thomas's death by approximate year, occupation and the area he was last known to be. I have found the Newspaper death notices of his wife Annie, his son Arthur, His brother William Maxwell but absolutely nothing for Thomas. Arthur Ernest would have been alive when Thomas died so I can't understand why I can't find anything.
I have been researching my tree for about 8 years, on Mum and Dad's side and have many folders of B,D,M certs, census, Newspaper notices, photos, WWI & WWII service records, electoral roll etc. I have also been lucky enough to have descendants read the various advertisements in newspapers which has helped a great deal.
I have checked all over Australia for Thomas's death and I'm now thinking he may have gone back to England. There was also family in San Fran. USA.

No, I didn't know about the transcriptions agent to be honest. I will have a read through. Thank you for the information and link.

I think I do have that cert you refer to below in 1887 but will have to go through my file of Wrong Thomas Brown certs and let you know   ::)

Regards,
Michelle

I suggest you make a search such as this

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q&exactPhrase=Thomas+Brown&anyWords&notWords&l-textSearchScope=*ignore*|*ignore*&fromdd=01&frommm=01&fromyyyy=1880&todd=01&tomm=01&toyyyy=1900&l-word=*ignore*|*ignore*&sortby&s=40

and exhaustively consider each one.

Your arthur ernest brown apparently died in NSW in 1939, I assume you know that.   The fact that his parents names are stated in the index is usually a good indication that he wasn't an only child who was the last of his line.

Thanks for the information Eregil_gene,

I have spent many many hours searching Trove, and along the way found lots of Articles, Advertisments and personal notices for Thomas and family but still no death.

I have the birth, death and marriage certificates for Arthur Ernest, for are right about siblings,  brother Leslie Thomas and Emma Gee Jones (nee Brown).
I have attached Arthur's birth and marriage certs and will post another with death and Thomas and Annie Gee Potts marriage certs. Hopefully I have missed a vital piece of information which you could kindly point out to me.
I have the 1841 census when Thomas was still in Liverpool UK with his parents...His father John Brown, Mariner is a whole new headache.
Funny thing is I have progressed further with nearly every other surname other than my own surname  ::)
