Marriage look-up at Surrey HC
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 20:31 GMT (UK) »
Please could someone look up a marriage for me which is on fiche or film at the Surrey History Centre ?  Year and quarter: 1906 Q4, church:  Aldershot Holy Trinity.  Name of groom: Alfred George WHITEHOUSE.  GRO ref. Farnham 2a 227.
(Aldershot Parish Church = GRO pages 209-220; Ash Parish Church = GRO pages 231-232).  Full extract wanted please including register entry number in left-hand column.  I'd  be very grateful.

Are you sure this is at the Surrey History Centre - Aldershot is in Hampshire  :-\

Is it Aldershot or Ash that you want, how do you know which church it was?

Hi Rosie,
Yes, Aldershot registers are at the Surrey FHC.  The church in which I want the look-up done is Aldershot Holy Trinity.  The Surrey FHC publishes an on-line list of its parish register holdings.  Aldershot Holy Trinity registers are on microfilm or microfiche at the Surrey Family History Centre.  Aldershot is indeed in Hampshire, but falls within the Farnham (Surrey) Registration District.

How do I know that the marriage sought is at Aldershot Holy Trinity ?  I am experienced at "marriage mining" techniques, which take advantage of the fact that Anglican churches are arranged quasi-alphabetically in the marriage registers of the General Register Office.  I say "quasi alphabetically" because the ancient parish church often takes preference.  Here, the parish church of Aldershot (St Michael) takes preference over Holy Trinity, which is followed by Ash.  Aldershot, being a substantial town, would have a large number of marriages, and that is why I am confident that the marriages at Holy Trinity will run from GRO pages 221-229 (page 230 is blank) and thereby include the marriage that I seek at GRO page 227.  It probably took place at around 25th December 1906, as it is near to the end of the page range quoted.  Check it out and see whether I am right !  I would be very grateful.

Have you tried contacting Surrey History Centre direct for a copy as you know the church.

Hi Keith

Chatters who go out and about to do look-ups are few and far between. You might have a long wait.

I would suggest contacting Surrey History Centre (as Rosie suggested) or purchase the certificate from the General Register Office at Southport.

Hi Dawn,
This is my first posting on the Surrey section.  I saw that there had been 3967 completed look-ups and thought that this was an active site where I could get some help, particularly as I was able to pinpoint exactly what I wanted and where to find it, so that it would take barely ten minutes to obtain.  I am disillusioned and will try other routes.  By the way, this request is not for my own genealogy or even on behalf of anyone specific - it is simply to complete part of a pro bono publico project - so I don't want to spend money on it.

Thank you for the reality check.
Keith
