Burial record for Rev Fr Edward Mimnagh
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 13:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I`m looking for the burial site of my Uncle, Reverend Father Edward Mimnagh, who died in Stroud in 1970. He was estranged from the family, but an archivist at the Archdiocese of Cardiff has compiled a profile of his life for me. He was born in Scotland, and spent most of his working life in the valleys of South Wales, so he could be buried anywhere. Any hints would be most welcome. Thanks.

Hi there,

Welcome to Rootschat.

On your profile of your relative does it say he was working
in Stroud as well as dying there?
Did find his details you might already have?
Birth 20th August 1907 death March 1970.

Just wondered if he might be in the newspapers as a recognised
member of the town I should imagine he got a piece written
about him being a Reverend?

You might have to look at the local newspapers or see if he
left a Will.  Its not for sure that he might be buried in Stroud
as you never know he might have asked in his Will to be
buried somewhere else?

With his title do you know if he was Catholic? The Catholic
Church in Stroud is called Church of the Immaculate Conception.
They have a e mail address if you search for them online.
Maybe the present Rev Fr might still have that kind of information
It might be worth the try.

Hi Sandymc, thank you so much for your response.

The last place that my Uncle worked was in Hereford, 6 years prior to his death. He was a Catholic priest. Unfortunately he was also an alcoholic. I am so sad that we didn`t know him as he had 6 half-siblings who only knew that he existed, and that he was a priest in South Wales.

I`ve emailed the Catholic church in Stroud, and also the Archdiocese of Paisley, both a few weeks ago. So far no response.

I`m not a Catholic myself, and I wondered if there is a database of Catholic burial places?

I will definitely check the Stroud and Hereford newspapers, and I`m also going to contact each of the parishes where he worked. Its 42 years ago, but someone might remember  ::)

Hi again

Shame you havent had a reply from your e mails.  Just noticed
that Hereford area Catholic churches come under the
Archdiocese of Cardiff who might know more if that was his
last job.
I am afriad thats my knowledge of Catholic churches done I
am not Catholic either but maybe if you could get through
to an office in the Cardiff area someone might be able to
speak to you and let you know.  I did once phone a Vicar
for someone looking for old records of their ancestors and
he had a good chat with me and found what I was looking for
on his own PC which was handy laugh.
I just called the Diocese in Cardiff and spoke to a nice lady.
She said they have an archive there but it wont be available until Friday this week to speak to anyone. The number you need is on
the website of the Archdiocese as I dont think I can put telephone
numbers on this post.  She also said you could try phoning the
Priest at Hereford as he might be also able to help.  So
maybe a call is better than a e mail.
Let me know by PM if you cant get through and I will try for you
again on Friday, dont know where you are living but if its Oz
you probably wont be able to do it. Hope you have the same
luck.

regards Sandymc

Hi Sandymc,

The archivist in Cardiff pulled together a wonderful profile of my Uncles`s life for me, and its actually his question "Do you know where he is buried?" that I`m tried to answer, so obviously they don`t know, which I found strange.

Sometimes I put things on the back burner of my mind and when I come back to them, the answer is there! Certainly I had no idea that I would be able to find out all about this man`s life in just a few emails.

Thank you for your help. I live in the UK.

Julie

Hi

If you are sure he died actually in Stroud, Stroud civil registration district covers not just Stroud, have you contacted Stroud Town Council to see if he is buried in Stroud cemetery? Civic cemeteries are the most common places for people to be buried (if they don't live in villages with access to still open Anglican or non-conformist churchyards). Stroud has had a civic cemetery since 1856.
