Passenger Lists from America to Scotland (or UK)
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 09:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can suggest the best place to start looking.   My great grandfather Bartholomew Kidd was born in america in 1864/1865, possibly to Scottish parents Thomas and Ann Kidd.  There is no trace of him in Scotland until his marriage in Stirling in 1884.  He then lived in Stirling until his death in 1927.

UK Incoming passenger lists start 1878 - haven't come across anything for Batholomew or parents Thomas and Ann so far, sorry.

Thanks Sandra

I know Ann Kidd remarried someone with the surname Meikle.  Her maiden name was McDonald.  I also discovered that Thomas Kidd was deceased by the time Bartholomew married in 1884.   I dont know when Thomas died, or whether it was in America or back in the UK, or when Ann remarried.

Given the timing of Bartholomew's birth, perhaps Thomas died in the civil war?

How do you know about Ann's remarriage - does she appear as Meikle on Scottish censuses? Have you looked for a remarriage for her in Scotland?

Hi Jorose

I cant find Ann on any Census.  However, she is shown on Bartholomew's marriage register as his mother, and shown as Ann Meikle (formerly Kidd) and maiden name McDonald.   She would also appear to be alive in 1884.  I suppose it may be she remained in America and Bartholomew came to Scotland sometime between 1864 and 1884 by himself.

In 1891 there appears to be a US-born Andrew Meickle living somewhere in Stirlingshire - I'd suggest checking him out.

Thanks Jerose

Only one I can find in 1891 is an 18 year old soldier with the argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, barracked near to Stirling Castle. Born in America but british subject.....not to worry, I will get there.
